Should I be upset with DC?

I have been bringing my daughter to DC for about 2 months now and havent had any concerns until Friday.  Each baby has their own crib and when i picked my daughter up on Friday they put the wrong crib sheet in her bag.  I let them know and they told me that she had been sleeping on it and it was hers.  I let them know that i know its not her sheet, but they told me to take it home anyway and wash it.  If it wasnt hers then bring it back this week.  I was a little put off by it.

Now I think my daughter has pink eye.  I also pretty upset because when i got there on Friday I had to complete an incident report because she hit her head.  Am i overreacting or should i bring this up to the director?

  • Just the joys of daycare...we have a Dora Cup that we sent every week...one day it didn't come home...well now I have a musical Dora Cup...They keep sending a different one every week...lets see when all the parents are united with the Dora Cups...

However the pink eye likely doesn't have anything to do with the crib sheet- and these mistakes happen...I would just wash it and return...next time clearly label every item. At that age children often suffer from clogged drains so see if takeing a washcloth to her eye and wiping out the drainage canal with some warm water will alleviate the eye gunk.

Incident reports...even if you have 1 adult watching only one crawler - or ready to crawl peanut...the odds are they'll bump their heads. If it seems to be neglect that's a different story- but get ready for bumped heads...the phase will end by the time they go to college.

  • I don't think either of those things are too big of a deal.  It's pretty easy to mix up the sheets, if they aren't labeled.  I wouldn't bring anything up to the director, but that's just my opinion.

Hopefully, your DD doesn't have pink eye.

  • I think those are all common things - it sucks, but it happens!
  • I don't think any of that sounds like a big deal.  However, if you are concerned, you should bring it up to either the teacher or the director and see how they react.

  • I think the only part of this whole thing that I would not like would be them having me bring home a sheet that was not mine to wash, but I get it...they need enough sheets this week and they don't know who has your sheet, so what are they to do?  Well, what I would do would have been to have apologized, taken the sheet from you and asked you if you had another sheet to bring next week and informed you that I would try to get the other sheet back.  I would then take home the sheet that your LO had and wash it myself to bring back in today.  The chance I take with that is that I wash it in the wrong detergent and screw up some other kid.  So really, I think they did all they could do at that point.  If I was you I would have (after getting over being annoyed, b/c I would have been) washed the sheet and then brought in a fresh one for your LO and the mystery sheet, this way you can say "this is my LO sheet, please be sure this is the one that gets used".  That will make your point and start off fresh and also do the nice gesture of washing the mystery sheet.  Hopefully your sheet gets returned.

Okay, a little long winded, but to make my point that I get why they did what they did.  It's just that there are a lot of little things and it gets annoying.  I agree that the pink eye was not sheet related.  And I would have been more upset if they didn't have me fill out an incident report and just blew it off...these types of bumps and thumps will happen.

Sounds like you need to make mental notes and then keep going with your gut on whether you still feel like the place is where you want LO, but not enough information just yet to do anything about it.  If you talk to the director you chance becoming 'that mom' and I don't know that there is a need for that just yet.  I am also all about talking directly with the caregivers first.

Oh, and in regards to the pink eye...if you are bf, bm does wonders for those types of things.  Crazy sounding perhaps but honestly, works wonders.

Hang in there, Monday morning is almost over!

  • Just my opinion, but if your stuff is not labeled then you have no right to complain.

  • Label, Label, Label. Neither of them seem super serious. Give them another chance, I mean I mix things up at my house, job, etc. so not a huge deal.

If it is keeps happening just talk to the director and let them know.

  • Incident reports are pretty common, or at least they should be.  Your LO, and the others in the classroom, are learning new and wonderful things.  They're going to get hurt.  Many centers have a policy that everything above the neck, and anything that leaves a mark or is a behavioral thing (ie, gets bitten), gets an incident report.

  • No big deal.  None of it.

Label your stuff.  Expect lots of bumps and bruises in the first months of crawling, pulling up and walking.  You will lose things, inherit things and forget things.

    These are minor complaints.

Hope your LO doesn't have pink eye.  But, if she does, deal with it and move on.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • This is all normal.  It's likely that your child got pink eye some other way.  Mine just had it last week and she only goes to DC 2  days per week and has a nanny the other time.  You have to label EVERYTHING.  I am very lax about those types of things and I recently noticed that my nanny labled her winter snow pants, boots, jacket etc.  When I asked her if she had done it she said "of course" and laughed at  me.  I'm sure if i had more than one crib at home I would be confused which crib sheet went where etc.  Look at it this way..... my DC washes their own linens in the room so the fresh crib sheets go on anyones crib.

  • I do have all of my daughters stuff labeled so i found it odd that they made me take home a sheet that did not have her name on it and insist that I wash it.  I know that stuff happens when there are a lot of little babies in the room.  I guess that i am just frusterated that things are happening while i am not there.  Thank you for your responses.  I will hold off on bringing the sheet issue up with them.

BTW-we just got back from the doctors and she does have pink eye and an ear infection.

  • Unfortunately getting things mixed up is normal.  Today we found out that DD's brand new jacket was taken home by someone else!!!!!!!!!!

This. We get bibs that belong to another baby in our bag all the time! I've learned to try and not sweat the small stuff. Once, when DD was still using pacis, she came home with another baby's paci. That was when she first started so I was pretty upset...but looking back I really don't think it's that big of a deal.

I second this suggestion.  I have used it in both DD's and my own eyes to clear up pink eye more than once.  DD's pediatrician even acknowledged that it works.

I would be furious!!!  How does a parent not know what their own child's jacket look like.

If I had issues with the wrong crib sheet being used, I would buy a cheap sheet, and take a cloth-sharpie to it.  Big huge block letters of dd's name that take up the entire sheet.  No way they would confuse your dd's sheet with someone else's that way...
