Feeding Question

My LO will be 3wks tomarrow--have a question about her breastfeeding routine_

She usually only eats on one side per feeding and only from 7-10minutes. Yet she is a gulper when she eats and is constantly eating for the most part that whole time. She eats every 2.5-3hrs. She rolls herself off after feeding and usually either falls asleep or refuses the other breast. I always burp her after but she is not a burper..just a tooter! Just wondering if anyone else has a newborn that seems to eat so little- just want to make sure she is getting enough...she does have plenty of wet/poopy diapers.

Can you tell if she is gaining weight? As long as she is having the appropriate number of wet/poopy diapers, seems to be gaining weight, and she isn't fussing for more I wouldn't worry about it.

My LO is just the opposite. He will eat for as long as I let him and rarely pulls off. He's a big burper and spits up also. If I try to take him off after 15-20 mins to switch sides, he often fusses/cries until I can get him latched back on. He also likes to take his time eating. Swallow 4 times and look around or rest then swallow 4 more times and take another break.

My LO was the exact same way up until 3 weeks - 7 minutes, one side, then straight to sleep. Then one day all of a sudden she decided she wanted 10 mins, both sides. Even that wasn't enough and we've been supplementing with an ounce of formula after BF. I finally got my supply caught up to her appetite after pumping all week. If your LO is not getting enough you'll know it. Mine would start rooting - smacking her lips, sticking out her tongue, and eventually crying.

My LO has a new pattern every day - sometimes every hour. At night, she'll eat for 2 or 3 min TOPS - sometimes on each side sometimes only one side. Sometimes she'll eat for 10 or 15 min on each side on both sides, sometimes only one side, sometimes she'll eat for 5 min and refuses to eat more until I put her down at which point she'll suddenly remember she's starving.

It is often tiring having to roll with the punches and be ready for something totally different each day.

My girl is a gulper too. She puked several times when my milk came in because she eats so fast. She is aggressive and only does a few minutes on each side. She is healthy and gaining weight.

Thanks for the replys---glad my little girl isnt the only one with a weird eating schedule. I figured she is so young that once her tummy gets bigger she will eat more. We are heading to the doctor today for her 2 week check up even though today she is 3 weeks--all the snow/ice last week had to reschedule---so we will see about her weight!!
