Parenting after 35

Update on my FTT son & other issues

We had a 6 week follow-up for Keegan (16 months old) on Thursday.  Last post I mentioned he does not have Celiac.  Yay!  But he has not gained enough weight by drinking his supplement, so now he is on a appetite stimulant that we will start tonight (needed to do a 3 day diary first). He is just a tad over 20 lbs, but his height is finally catching up. So we go back in 6 weeks to see where he is.  They think he does not get enough calories for what his body needs so we need to trick him to eat more.

In other news with my 2nd son Liam, I brought him in for a preschool screening on his articulation issues with his speech on Friday.  I figured they were going to tell me it was age & boy appropriate.  Nope, we signed a PPT right there that he definitely needs speech services since he has both articulation & phonology issues.  & on top of it.. they are worried about his OT??? Umm, I guess he did not want to sit on a sit & spin & now they think he has a fear of being off the ground??? I actually told her that I was not worried at all in this area since he does leaps off of the couch to the ottomon & we were at a bounce house the day before & he is a jumping, leaping, diving maniac.

Why does it always seem to hit me all at once, never can catch a break with one kid before there is something else wrong ; )

  • Awww!

Well, I guess it's good that Keegan's getting an appetite stimulant, but I'm sorry Liam needs speech therapy.  They seriously think he has issues because he didn't want to play on a sit -n- spin?  Maybe he just doesn't like getting dizzy!

    Anyway, I am sorry!  :(

  • That sounds a little ridiculous that they think he has a tactile/sensory issue because he won't sit and spin!  Do you think they are lumping him into a category and inferring other issues just because of the speech delay?  Well at least he will get speech therapy and that can't hurt to learn some exercises to try at home.  And as for Keegan, 20 lbs doesn't seem grossly underweight for a 16 month old!  Simon isn't much heavier than that and my friend's 16 month old is 19 lbs and the doctor hasn't put her on any supplements or special diet.  It's funny how different pediatricians can be.  Hang in there mama, your boys are doing great and so are you!  I still don't know how on earth someone can manage just to get 3 kids up and dressed in the morning when it's hard enough to manage one!

I understand.  Hang in there! It does get better and is all worth it.

I'm glad it's not Celiac and they have something else to try.  My second daughter was in speech therapy from 4 yrs old through 3rd grade.  Her speech is now the best in the house. When she started therapy, they did a vision screening and discovered she needed glasses.  Boy, did I feel like a heel not only was she having trouble communicating she couldn't see.

Hope you have a good week!

  • Take the therapy.  Most kids like OT.  I hope Keegan starts to get the growth to keep your Ped off your back.

  • doh.  Sorry to hear you have a bunch of stuff landing on your plate at once but hopefully it will all sort itself out soon.  And glad you are getting the speech therapy now -- it can work amazingly fast at a young age!

  • My son was on periactin for a while. It definitely helped him get back on the weight chart. FFT is tough. We still struggle to keep my little guy from falling back off the charts. We've been hanging out at the 5% in weight. Good luck!

Did it really help?  We just started tonight.  I am so nervous having him on the medication.  Right now he is not even on the chart.. has not been since 6 months.  Would love to be in the 5%.  My older boys were always in the 10-25%.

  • I am totally okay with the speech services, I wanted him to get it since I was worried - I know it will do good things for him!  But I forgot to mention the GOOD NEWS!  So the preschool screening was basically a rating of where he is developmentally overall at his age & he scored high in all the areas (adaptive, motor, cognitive, communication) - so it is funny that for communication I think it was a 20 to pass, & his score was a 24.  He understands everything great, we just don't understand him ; ) But it is a relief to see that overall he is doing wonderfully!  See there is my silver lining.

  • Keegan should be able to gain weight with stimulant.

In NJ preschoolers diagnosed with speach issues have free access to public preschool where they stay extended hours and take ST. Everybody else has to do lotterry + pay tuition to get into the same public preschool. I have two friends whose sons are in the program in different parts of NJ, and they rave about it. It's really working well for their boys. Not sure what the rules are in CT, but I think Liam should benefit from it also.

Matt is 19 months and only 21lbs.  I do wonder why one pedi says FTT and another one will say it is fine.

  • For us yes it really did help. The first few days it was strange to see him on it. He would, before the medication, say he was all done before he even started eating. So once he started the medication he would start with the whole all done thing right away, then he'd take a bite or two and be signing and asking for more, he'd eat a few more bites, say he was all done, then start asking for more. This went on for like a half an hour. His routine was saying he was all done, but his little body was telling him to eat. I can't recall how long he was on it and he went up to 18%. Eventually we took him off and he's come back down a bit but he's maintaining so far (knock on wood) and we've thus avoided endoscopy.

We also found out he had some food allergies (the peds GI specialist typically refers to a pediatric allergist with FTT cases as well)- one of which was milk- so we removed milk from his diet and that seemed to help as well. I also try to make his food as calorie dense as possible. I know he won't eat a lot so what he puts in his mouth has to count. I don't play hardball with him. If he won't eat what we are having I make sure to get him something he will eat. A normal child I wouldn't do this for but I know this kid will actually starve himself and he doesn't have room to lose weight. There have been days where it seemed liked he's lived on crackers or hot dogs. So be it. I figure some thing is better than nothing.

Like I said good luck with the FFT. It can be quite a challenge. I hope the periactin works!

It's not necessarily the weight, but how much they gain from appt to appt. He is not following his own curve.  So in a 6 week span he stayed at the same level on the chart.
