Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If your LO slept in something besides a crib for a while...

like a PNP, bouncer, etc, when did you finally move them to the crib? We have a room with the crib that DD is in right now and then we have her big girl room that we just completed with a full size bed. I really don't think DD is ready to leave the crib yet and I have a few mos. before #2 is here to try but something tells me #2 will be sleeping in the PNP or something else until DD is ready for a big girl bed. I am thinking this could end up being closer to 2.5 years old, so #2 would be about 6 mos. When do you think is too long to not have them in a crib? I know he would need to get used to sleeping in the crib before too long.

Re: If your LO slept in something besides a crib for a while...

  • I think we ended up moving them at about 3 or 4 months.

But every kid is ready for the next thing (crib, big girl bed, etc.) at different times, and you don't want lots of trauma in any case.  If you wait until DD is 2.5, then put #2 in her crib, will she feel displaced? Will she say no, that's MY bed!?  You might want some kind of gap between the time #1 leaves the crib and #2 goes into it.

And good luck making it to 2.5.  I know many many people do, but DS1 was climbing out at 17m, so we had to move him to his big boy bed then.

We just ended up buying a 2nd crib. Ours were only 14m apart, though, so we hoped we'd have some major crib overlap. It didn't really work out that way for us, but we went with the $150 Graco Lauren both times - it's not like we bought two $600 cribs, you know?

  • We moved DD from her bassinet to her crib at 10 weeks, and converted the crib to a toddler bed at 22 months.

  • We moved from the bassinet to the crib when LO was 8 weeks old, but I kind of wish we had waited a little longer

  • DS slept in a PNP in our room until he was 6 months and did fine with the transition to his crib. He's still in it and will be until he can crawl out
  • She slept in a co-sleeper mini in our room for about 3-4 months. There were no issues with transition at all.

  • I had DD in a co-sleeper till we bought her crib at 6 months. She is in her crib in her room. She is not ready to have a toddler bed yet though.
  • He slept in the PNP in our room until he was about 3-4mos.. then we moved him to the crib in his own room.  He'll be in the crib until he learns how to crawl out.

  • DS slept in a PNP in our room until 4 months. Then I couldn't get him to sleep in either the crib or PNP until 7 months, so he slept with us. At 7 months, we tried to move him into the crib again and he did fine. At 22 months, he's still in his crib and hasn't climbed out yet. I know all babies are different, but my cousin's son is 2.5 and still in his crib, so it's possible that your LO won't climb out too.

  • DS slept in a PNP in our room until around 11.5 months, when he got moved to his own room in his crib. The transition was fine; DS actually slept much better in his crib (he took naps in his crib earlier than 11.5 months, so it wasn't entirely new to him).

  • We moved DS to the crib around 7 weeks and he slept so much better there.
  • DD slept in a PNP in our room until 6 weeks, when we moved her to her crib.

  • LO slept in a PnP (in various stages-newborn napper-bassinet-floor of PnP) in our room until he was about 2 months old. Then we moved him still in the PnP into his own room and he slept in it until he was just over 6 months old when we got him his crib. He's 19 months old and I'm incredibly encouraged by the number of posters with older LOs still in cribs because I want LO in his for as long a possible. Eventually we'll remove the side and wait until he's outgrown it before we get him a "big boy bed". The relative security of the crib comfort me!
  • DS slept in his bassinet until he was too big for it, which was at about 3 months old.

  • DD slept in a PnP until she was 4 months old. She slept great in it and we had no problems at all switching her to a crib.
  • Our oldest slept in the PNP until 6 months.  We knew we were moving shortly after having her, so we didn't buy a crib right away.  We ended up moving when she was 4 months old.  We went into temporary housing for 2 months waiting for our house to finish being built.  At 6 months we moved into the house and she went straight to the crib with no issues.

DS went to the crib at 2-3 months, because he just slept better there.

Now for DD's transition from the crib to big girl bed.  I worried she was not ready but I thought we'd try it.  I wanted her to be well into her big girl bed before DS came along, so she no longer saw the crib as her bed or displaced by the baby.  I figured if she wasn't ready then the crib was still there, and we could always try again later.  However, she did great.  Nights were no issue.  She went straight to sleep.  Naps were difficult for awhile there, but we kept at it and she eventually got back on track with those too.   We moved her at exactly 2 years.  We hope to do something similar with DS before #3 arrives.

  • DD slept in a bassinet by my side of the bed for 8 weeks.  Then, she moved into our bed for the next 7 months.  She has slept in her crib for 9 months now.  We had no problem moving her because she was "ready".  She would wake often when I was close to her in bed, but could sleep for 2 hours for a nap with no interruption.  So, we moved her one night (middle of the night) and she slept until morning.  We did that for a week and then started putting her to bed in her crib.  This was not a problem at our house.  GL!

  • DS slept in the newborn napper of the PNP till 3 months then moved to the bassinet part for a few months then to the bottom. He's still sleeps in the PNP. He hated the crib. We've tried the crib a multiple ages but he doesn't want anything to do with it. So he'll go from PNP till bed. My pediatrican's kid slept in the PNP till he was over 2.
