I knew a family with this surname, spelled the same: Leighton. I can't imagine it on any one. The family was pretty trashtastic and I think putting it on any child is next to child abuse.
When I see it spelled out Leighton I think girl, but when I hear the name I usually think boy, but only bc the only Leighton is spelled Layton and he is a boy

A trendy "misspelling" of a masculine surname, Layton.
Boy.
Is that how you pronounce Leighton? I have been saying Lee-ton all this time.
That is how I have always heard it pronounced. Not a fan. I would have thought Lee-ton (yuck on both accounts).
The family I knew, the Leightons, pronounced their last name as Lay-tun.
Woops, that came out wrong on my part. I was trying to say Lay-ton is the correct pronunciation and how I would say it ? but with everyone trying to be unique these days spelling Lee as Leigh it makes my stumble and sometimes say Lee-ton. **Corrected above response.
Well that is so funny! I have a (male) cousin named Layton and I never realized Leighton was pronounced the same way.
Sorry, he spells it Lleyton...pronounced the same way though, but I still think of boy. I think outside the US it is considered a boys name...but don't quote me on that.
It's a surname to me because of the painter Lord Fredric Leighton. But since it is pronounced like Layton I'd say boy even with the more feminine leigh spelling.
With that spelling I wasn't sure, but I think it is a boys name. I like the spelling Leyton better though if it is for a boy. The 'leigh' seems a little girlie.

Haha, I know of a similar situation - same name and pretty trashy parents. The son wasn't so bad though but it was only a matter of time before he broke.
PS - I have full intentions of using trashtastic now!

This exactly.
Total girl name
Leighton= girl
Layton= boy
I like it either way!! Great name!!
It seems mostly to depend on the spelling
if I saw Leighton I would thing girl
if I saw Layton I would thing boy.
it sounds unisex though
