What's with the plastic toys???

Is it just me, or is almost every toy out there for kids under 5 made of plastic with lights and noises?  Oh, and they are all advertised as being "educational".  Like a ball that makes noise and lights up is going to teach my 8 month old his ABCs.  Riiiiight.

DH and I were looking through some catalogs and were amazed at the crap that's out there!  We try and stick with the 'basics' - blocks, rings, books, stuffed animals and DS's favorites are his HABA ring and frog.

Re: What's with the plastic toys???

  • I know! I'm trying to spread the word that I want none of that crap for the holidays!!

Have you checked out oompa toys? They carry Haba and a lot of other cool stuff :) mostly wood and fabric toys. There's a wishlist function too that I'm going to try to get my technologically challenged ILs to use.

  • We have an old Little Tikes kitchen.  Before they made noises.  She loves it and doesn't care that it doesn't have all the fancy stuff.  She loves to pretend.  Her favorite toys are her books and dolls (none of which do anything special).

I hate all the musical stuff.  Too noisy.

  • i just ordered some wooden animals from hyena cart, there is a congo of all hand made toys.
  • We have, I think, 3 toys that light up and make noise and they are all pretty quiet toys.  My rule is, if I am going to be annoyed with it, it doesn't come into my house.  I'm not going to lie and say we don't have any plastic toys, but I think that only a handful (3-5) were bought new.  Everything else has been a hand-me-down or purchased second hand.  I try to push for wooden toys, but my biggest thing is not buying anything made in China.
  • Ditto AshersMom! We very consciously try to avoid buying anything made in China... not only for safety reasons, but also to avoid supporting communism. So, our favorite toy company is www.HolgateToy.com

They've been around since 1789! All are made in the USA, are safe, and very affordable! We just placed a large order for all the kids we have to buy for for Christmas. We love Holgate!!

  • Thanks for the tip Hawaii!  I wonder if people really know that part of our national economic problem is our out of control buying goods from China?
  • I love the felt play food from Lilly Bean Market!  No more plastic food for my nieces!!  https://www.lillybeanmarket.com/index.asp
