I need creative babyproofing ideas!

As some of you may remember, Mady's bed is a loft bed with stairs.  They're very sturdy and tall so we thought we had a while til Declan figured them out.

Well DH went in there today when they were playing and found Declan on her bed.  He was looking over and Mady was patting him on the back.  He could have easily toppled over.  We have NO clue how to babyproof these stairs, since Mady needs to be able to get up and down too!  And they share a room, with his mattress being on the floor.

Needless to say we didn't really think this far ahead, LOL.

I do have a snoogle (Is that what those body pillows were called) laying on the floor in front of her bed for another reason, all curled up so it would break his fall a bit but still, a little baby could get really hurt.  And I'm sure he could climb over a bed rail (plus it would be IMPOSSIBLE for me to get Mady in bed if there was a bed rail up on her bed!)

Any ideas?

  • YIKES!   Hmmmm...absolutely no good idea comes to mind.  I hope someone has a good idea for you!

  • Could you make the ladder rungs a little farther apart?  Or put a little door on the bottom rung that returns shut when you open it?

  • i'm visualizing a screen partition thingie that goes in front that Maddie can move or get around but decieving to Declan so that he thinks its a wall.  or maybe pillows (or somthing) on the bottom rungs so he can't get up but she can climb over or smart enough to move.
  • Hmm, I have no idea! Could you remove a couple of the bottom rungs perhaps and she still reach to climb up?
  • can we see a picture?  is it like a ladder you could remove once she's in bed and put back in the morning?
  • They are actual stairs, bolted to the bed.

Here is an older picture, the layout has changed a few times, LOL!

  • I think she's talking about a loft bed with stairs - not a ladder. Like this... see the stairs on the left? Those go up to the loft bed. They're not super tall and easy enough for toddlers to safely climb up them. I don't have any idea how to baby proof that though. Unless maybe you could just put part of a play yard over the bottom of the stairs? Can DD move something like that?

I thought of that.  I think she could but I would worry about her waking him up since their naps overlap a bit.

If I can teach her to close the lid of the potty and flush maybe it is possible to teach her to move it and put it back?

  • What about hanging a curtain from the ceiling concealing the stairs?  How old is Mady?

If you or anyone you know is handy with carpentry, I imagine it would be a fairly simple hack to baby proof it.

It shouldn't be too hard....Get a piece of quality wood, cut it to the same measurements as the "wall" on the right of the stairs, cut out holes for the drawers, attach a simple gate, and lacquer the whole thing.

I hope what I just said makes sense, I'm more of a visual person.

Declan is way too sneaky and curious for that, he'd know to just look around the curtain, LOL.  She is 2.5 (3 in June) and he is almost a year old.

  • Wow...hum, I know Charlie could easily get up those stairs and then fall off right onto his head. But I also know that Claire could easily find something to block them with, she's good at the "No, Charlie" thing right now.

Hope you figure something out soon!

  • I know that Claire could do a gate if we taught her how to open it...I had to teach her how to do the toilet locks since they're only there to keep Charlie out. She has no trouble doing the "childproof" toilet locks and they require two hands to push a button, slide another and then open the lid so I would imagine she could work a gate if I showed her how to do it. We have gates in our house, but I'm not about to show her how they work :P Maybe you can put something up that Mady can do but Declan can't?
