preparing for DS

Did any of you freeze meals or buy extra stuff in preparation for delivery? I didn't last time and kind of wished I would have. I lived off of trail mix, granola bars, dry cereal, hard boiled eggs and string cheese! Now that Bella's involved I can't really do that, besides DH got tired of me saying "I have NO idea what's for dinner"... What did you do to prepare if anything? The only things I really NEED to get before DS gets here is nipple cream and pads (which I'm heading to our CD store this week to see about reusable ones)... anything else you can think of... We're 34 weeks today and Bella came at 35 and 2 so I'm just trying to get myself prepared :)

Re: preparing for DS

  • We went to Costco and bought enough toilet paper, paper towels, ziploc baggies, etc. to last 6 months.  It's been great not having to worry about buying that stuff, especially since it's usually big packages, which can be difficult with LO (or in your case, 2 LOs!) in tow.

And yes, I cooked like maniac in the weeks before the birth!  I made all our favorites that would freeze well.  A couple of lasagnas, spaghetti sauce, chili, beef and barley soup, white bean and ham soup, and we bought chicken breasts, turkey burgers, buns, frozen veggies, etc. to have on hand.  Other than fresh produce, we didn't need to shop for over a month, which was wonderful!

  • I wanted to cook extra but never got around to it - so good for you for planning ahead!  It ended up being okay, b/c I knew my mom would be here for a month after E was born - but once she left, I sure wished we had more food in the freezer!  We did stock up on toilet paper, etc though, and that's been super helpful.

  • just think of the types of meals you can get in the freezer section :) pastas, stir fries, chicken pot pie, pizza, etc. you can freeze lots of things! my mom was here after Miss A was born so I didn't really have to cook/freeze much before she was born...plus we didn't have room in the freezer.
  • I made a bunch of freezer-friendly meals that cooked easily in the crock pot -- pot roast, split pea soup, lentil soup, chili and spaghetti sauce. People brought us food at first, but having those extra go-to meals was key! I wish I had time to load up the freezer even now... A eats amazingly well, but I don't put the same effort into our meals. :(

This is the same for B... we always are sure she has a good healthy meal but sometimes not so much for us!

  • if you have the space for it freezer meals would be awesome!  I didn't cook very much because my grandma was here almost every day and she would help and we don't have the freezer space.

  • Ohhhhh yeah. We had a freezer full - and I do mean FULL - of food. I spent 2 weeks cooking all kinds of meals (lasagna, chili, pea soup, etc.) and packing them in single serve, throwaway containers. I think Ben thought it was overkill at first, but we didn't have to cook for nearly 3 weeks after the boys came home and it was a lifesaver! It also helped us to eat relatively healthily during that period, since I think otherwise we'd have defaulted to crappy take out.

And then when my mother visited at the end of that time, she cooked again (risotto, more lasagna, a chicken casserole and a few other things) and filled it up again. Big Smile
