Prenatals and DHA

Hi all,

Last week when I was at my first prenatal appointment, my dr. asked if the prenatal vitamin I'm taking has DHA. I thought it did, but when I got home and checked it does not.. I guess I am going to finish this bottle and then buy ones with DHA.

Any recommendations? Did your doctors also insist upon a prenatal with DHA? When I first started looking at them a few months back, they all seemed so similar..but, I guess not!

Thanks in advance!

  • I started taking a seperate DHA pill, as my prenatal doesn't have DHA.  IT WAS AWFUL!!!! I was burping up fishy anchovy nastiness for at least 2 hours after taking it.  I asked my OB about it and he said that there is so much debate on if there is even any major benefit in taking it.  He said "your baby isn't going to be stupid just b/c you don't take DHA and on the other side you aren't going to have a genius just because you do take it"  My sister is a NP and she said she never took it, and from what she's read, DHA really is important for the baby AFTER birth, through breast milk or fortified formula.

  • I take the 'one-a-day' prenatals - two separate pills, one with DHA and one with all the rest of the stuff. They run approximately $15/month (can sometimes find them for $11) so a little on the pricier side. OB recommended DHA for brain development but i don't think it's the end of the world if you can't tolerate it or take it. I've been fine with them but take them at night. Good luck!

  • My doctor didn't mention it, she just wanted to make sure there was enough Folic Acid in it.

  • My doctor didn't mention it. My first bottle did not contain DHA but I recently purchased Vitafusion gummies and they have DHA in them.

  • my doctor told me to take DHA too....it is a different pill from my pre natal.
  • My doctor didn't mention DHA, I just read about it and picked them up from GNC.

  • I am on  prescription prenatal and it has DHA
  • I take Spring Valley prenatals which don't have DHA in them.  I started taking a separate DHA supplement along with the prenatals while we were ttc.  The dha is also Spring Valley and are fish free so there isn't a fishy aftertaste.

  • My doctor recommended taking a separate plant-based DHA supplement with my prenatal.  They are about 10 dollars a bottle, which lasts about a month or so.  Also plant-based=no fish taste.

  • my doctor didn't disuss anything particular outsid of asking if  i take any and giving me some samples. sometimes i take some with dha sometimes i dont. the dha oily capsules give me heartburn and give me a fish aftertaste so im not religious about them.

  • I am taking One a Day as well. They made me a little sick when I was taking them in the morning (and gave me a strange taste if I burped) so I started taking them at night. It made a big difference. It has helped with my digestion (I'm sure you know what I am talking about) and no more nasty burps. Good luck!

  • I would be nervous about changing your prenatal if it is working well for you to now (others can cause nausea, constipation, etc). I take a separate prenatal-specific DHA pill (it is fish-free, so no fish burps or mercury concerns). My OB has never mentioned it, but my midwife said I could take it if I wanted - not critical, but beneficial.

  • My doctor prescribed a vitamin with DHA included, so cleverly called, PNV-DHA. She said she doesn't really know if all the hype about DHA is true, but thinks it can't hurt. Interestingly enough, she also mentioned how some doctors don't recommend DHA because they think it causes babies to become fat!
  • I take a separate DHA - Expecta. I was taking the DHA that came with the Women's One Daily prenatal pills but those were nasty and had a fishy taste going on. Expecta is a fish free DHA -- and it doesn't taste gross at all. Tasteless.
  • I've been taking the NatureMade Prenatal Multi with DHA. They're a softgel so they don't really have much of a smell like some of the other prenatals that some of my friends have taken that made them sick...
