Hawaii Babies

those who have had D&C's

any tips?  either to prep, or for easier recovery?  one of my friends strongly recommended I go under, that the pain with just the local numbing agent was excrutiating.

feel free to PM me instead.  thanks...

Re: those who have had D&C's

  • I was put under, my OB didn't even give me a choice. Maybe it's because I was having enough emotional pain and had already tried cytotec which was miserable. (It was for our miscarriage in April, my body never got rid of everything on it's own even though the fetus wasn't viable). I did bleed for a few days after but it was more like spotting, nothing like postpartum bleeding.

That said, I went under, the procedure was about 15 mins so I was asleep and away from Bella and Ryan for about an hour. I nursed her right before I was put under and then nursed her again within an hour after surgery. My OB and the anesthesia Dr said it was fine. I was prescribed percocet to deal with the pain afterwards and I only needed to take a couple of doses.  The percocet made me a little loopy. I would recommend being sure that someone can help you take care of your LO after the surgery. I was in and out of sleep for the rest of the day and was thankful to have DH home to help with Bella and me when I needed it.

  • Hi Sandra!

I was also fully under. I don't think I had a choice. Or I vaguely remember I asked my OB at the time & basically she said I could have local, if I really wanted it, but I had the feeling it would have been an odd request. They did other stuff too because mine was related to a health scare.

for me, they did the procedure at an outpatient surgery center. I recall being at the center from 645 for prep until 10 or 11 am when they released me to go home.

I was really out of it from the general 'cause I have memories of what immediately happened afterwards which MH says never happened. Hahaha the rest of the day I was on the couch & was in and out of sleep due to the general & the pain meds they gave. My throat hurt 'cause of the breathing tube & it was difficult topee cause of the catether. I stayed home from work for 2-3 days just to rest. But I was up doing stuff on the 2nd day.

They didn't put a catheter in for my surgery but it's something I would ask about... some people DO have serious problems peeing after having a cath so I would try to avoid that if you can. Since my surgery was going to be so short they just had me go to the bathroom right before I went back. I should add that I wasn't up to doing much until day 2 or 3 after surgery. I just laid around... I think part of it was because it was a very emotional experience for me because of everything that was going on.

  • Omg it hurt to pee! I wanted to, but it was like I was unable to. I had to do the warm water to help the process.

and yeah, my "doing stuff" was pretty limited to minimal activity, like showering, getting upfor meals, reading, being on the internet. My surgery was on a Wednesday & I was scheduled to go back to work on Friday, but I ended up taking that day off to rest further.

I wonder why they put a catether. I don't recall them ever mentioning it prior so it would have been good for me to know beforehand. I didn't even know to ask. But yeah that sucked. I'm not looking forward to it for the cs! Hehehe

totally unrelated, but it turns out the dr. Doing my amnio is my d&c dr! =)

    this.  lots of good vibes!

  • thanks for sharing your experiences - that helps me know what to expect.  I didn't realize I'd be out of it for a few days.  MH will take the day off, and my dad will be here to help with E, so that's a relief.  hrm, I'm pretty sure I had a catheter when they gave me the epidural (i was *so* out of it, i'm not even positive!), but it was gone before the epi wore off, and I didn't have any side effects.  hopefully if I need one this time, it'll be okay!

thank so much for the support, too!  I really appreciate it.  Not looking forward to it Sad  but it'll be nice to finally stop bleeding, and i really, really hope this is the last of our complications...

  • Oh no, I am so sorry!  Hugs to you.

I had a D&C without being put under. I was only out for a day (took it easy for 24 hours).  I won't lie, it was uncomfortable and very emotional.  I was the 1 in 1000 that they didn't get everything and I was in 'labor' and had to have an emergency D&C without being under again to remove the remaining.

I am not on here much but let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Maybe I had to have one because they did other things & the surgery was going to take longer?

I'm really sorry you have to go through this too. Mine wasn't related to pregnancy, but it was other stuff that had been going on for a while & it was still a lot to deal with.

I'm sending you tons of positive vibes and best wishes for a speedy recovery!
