Success after IF

Remind me what to pack in my hospital bag

I cannot believe how soon one forgets all the little details of the labor and delivery!  I seriously cannot remember everything that was useful and not so useful last time around.  So, ladies, what do I have to remember to pack and what can I leave at home?  ( I do know that I will be leaving the diaper bag at home and only bringing a coming home outfit and a blanket for baby).  Thanks!  Oh, and if it helps,  the plan right now is that I will be going in for an induction at 5:30 am on February 18th.

Re: Remind me what to pack in my hospital bag

  • I would mainly remember toiletries, slippers/socks and something to wear home. I also liked to have my own clothing for after delivery like yoga pants and nursing tops.

Gwen was in the NICU, so I needed a robe to have to wear back and forth from my room to the nursery. And, I was a showerer after delivery, so I liked having my own towel for my hair. Hospital towels were scratchy, and not big enough!

Less is more! Don't forget an outfit to bring baby home in!

  • my induction went so quick and i slept through all of labor until they told me to push ...they gave me some sleeping meds since i got crampy from the ripening gel.  The days after labor and delivery I loved having my laptop and charger.  charger for cell phone.  camera with plenty of batteries and or charger for that.  DH likes to play games so he took the PSP and charger with some games to keep himself occupied.  We also packed a couple of dvd's for our room.

They had all baby needed but I liked having him in jammies vs this little wrap top that the hospital provided so I had a few outfits .  He had his pics the day before we went home so I had an outfit for pics and one to go home in.

Plenty of change for the vending machine if they have one for your DH....If you plan to breast feed I would take the lanolin stuff or whatever you might use for your nipples as mine were SOOOOO sore those first few days.

    Good luck!

  • Not sure if you're bf'ing, but I was really glad I brought my Boppy to the hospital. The hospital provided everything else baby needed and most of what I needed, including lanolin, Tucks pads, etc. The only thing ii brought from home was my personal toiletries and things that were important to me like chapstick, ponytail holders, etc. Many hospitals even provide hair dryers--mine does, and I knew not to pack it b/c they told us in our childbirth class (you can call L&D to find out if you don't remember). One piece of advice...if you take your own pillow make sure to put a case on it that's not white so it doesn't get mixed up with the hospital pillows.
  • I second all of this:  I was really thankful to have my own towels and pillows!  We also forgot to pack things for DH, I will do that next time.  I was also thankful to have the cold packs for my head (I was really hot) and a massager (not that kind) for my back.

Years of trying and treatment, IVF#1 brought us our darling C!
  • Flip flops for the shower - some parts of the hospital are sterile, the shower may not be one of them.  I also suggest your own pillow in a colored pillow case.  Also, if you plan to go med free - something to push on your back.  Like a tennis ball or soemthing.

    Cameras, chargers, etc.  Good luck!
