Our LO is 11 days old, and the last few days we've been dealing with constipation. The first three days, she was breastfed...it just wasn't working out (had a difficult time latching on), so we switched to Enfamil (regular). She was spitting up quite a bit and seemed a little gassy. On Monday, we had our first doctor appointment, which is when he switched her over to soy formula (because of the spitting up, gassy and DH is slightly lactose intolerant-pretty mild case). Ever since she's been taking soy formula, she only has a BM every two-three days. Her first BM since being on soy, was firm/formed and screamed bloody murder while passing it. When this happened, I called the doctor and they suggested giving her water w/dark Karo syrup for Friday & Saturday. She had her second BM (since being on soy, and first since her water/syrup stuff) this morning around 6am...as she kept going, it would get softer, but still started out firm/formed and still screamed bloody murder. It is just so heartbreaking to see her in that kind of pain.
We decided to try Similac sensitive this morning and are going to continue to try that instead of the soy. This way, hopefully we'll avoid the constipation that goes along with soy, and we'll still be keeping in mind the fact that with DH being lactose intolerant-maybe there's a bit of that in her too. I keep reading that switching formulas and/or soy can bring on constipation. Is anyone else seeing this? I know I've heard formula fed babies don't have a BM as often as breastfed...so I guess my main goal at this point, is getting her to the point where she can have a BM and not scream!
Any suggestions? We're going to try to see how sensitive works...I hate switching like this, but I definitely don't want her on soy, if this is what it's going to do to her!
Thanks so much for your help ![]()
