Going back to work - WWYD?

We could be comfortable w/o me working. I feel guilty leaving two LO's at home, even though Jason is in preschool plus we have an excellent nanny that has been with us for 2.5 years. When I went back to work after Jason was born, the decision was made up for me b/c H and I were not "official" at the time, and I needed the benefits. Now we are official, and I have to decide. I like my job, my co-workers, and the pay, and I've been there for a long time. Working part-time or from home is not an option. My intuition tells me to go back now, and I can always quit if things don't work out. WWYD?

Re: Going back to work - WWYD?

  • I think the fact that you are considering going back to work even though you don't need to means that you miss the intellectual stimulation and the adult interaction that comes with work (assuming you work with people and not animals!) so I say go for it.  Like you said, you can always quit if you feel like you're away from the kids too much.

  • I personally tend to listen to my intuition a lot. Like you said, you could always quit if they don't work out.

  • I agree - I like it that you can always stop working if you find that it isn't working out.

  • I think your intuition is right.  It can be tough to go back from nothing.  Not impossible but tough.  I will say that I know both of mine have really benefitted from their time at DC and it has worked out well.  Not ideal, as I would prefer PT but that's not an option, but it works well.

  • It's nice that you have the option.   I say, go back and see how you feel after a few weeks.  I think you will be able to make a decision fairly quickly.  Good luck!

  • Yeah, maybe go back and see how you feel after a month or two?  Good luck!

  • I agree with PPs.  I would give it some time and not make a quick decision.  I'm sure you will find a groove and things will be fine.

  • Since you have the luxury of giving it a try and then making your decision that is probably what you should do. I would love to be able to stay home but would also feel very uneasy not having any income of my own.

  • I would go back.  As PP have said, you can quit if it does not work out.

  • I think it will be easier to decide once you go back to work and see how that feels for you. When I went back 8 weeks after having A, I enjoyed the mental stimulation and the money, but I did not like being away from A so long, so when DH got a job in another state, I quit in a second. Then I was home for 7 months and didn't quite like not working either, so now that I'm working PT, I'm much happier. Can you find work in another company that allows you to work less hours or work from home?
