has anyone tried the recordable storybooks?

i am thinking of trying one for my niece but before i lay down like $25 for a book, i am curious if anyone has tried these? or have you received one as a gift?

she turned 3 in Dec and is really into books now. she will have a brother in June so i want to make sure she has a few things that are still just hers from me.

Re: has anyone tried the recordable storybooks?

  • My DS has two from my mom, and he will sit in our living room and flip threw them to hear his Grammy a lot. They are definitely pretty cute!  The only thing I am not crazy about is that they need fair amount of light to work so we can't really use them as a bedtime book because we keep his room too dim before bed.  But that is my only and fairly minor complaint.

  • why do they need light to work?
  • I guess I should also say that they don't need to have direct light shining right on them, but they work best in a well lit area.

There are little holes on the inside of each page near the spine (two on the first recorded page, three on the second, ect).  Light needs to hit those holes in order for the book to know to play the recording, and depending on how many holes the light hits is how it knows what page recording to play.  I am not sure if I am doing a good job explaining it or not...sorry it is late, I may have to revisit this post tomorrow, lol!

  • My DD got one for Christmas from the grandparents and really likes it.  She likes hearing her grandma's voice reading to her.

  • My DS got one from his Yiayia and Pappou and he likes to listen to it and hear their voices.  He'll usually say who's talking when he's on each page.  I'm not sure what the pp was saying about needing light.  I don't think they need light at all.

  • My mom did one for DD for Christmas and it was a pain in the a$$ for her. The recording kept getting messed up (started on the wrong page, etc) and we never could figure out how to get it right. And yes, the book has a photosensor or something, so you have to have a lot of light for it to work.

I believe someone posted about this on the DC Nest board too (Secretservicewife, perhaps?) She was having similar problems. I guess try it at your own risk?

  • Grandparents gave my son one for Christmas.  He was only interested in pushing the buttons and turning the pages to hear it change vs. actually listening.  Complete waste for him at this age IMHO.  I'm sure some kids would sit and listen, but I would ask her parents.
  • DS has 2 from Grandma from Hallmark and he's obsessed with them. I recommend!

  • I did one before my last work trip so DH and I could "read" to the girls each night.  Seemed to go well :)
