The CD board (and CDing) is no joke

SO brought up the possibility of CDing while were are at home- so I went over to the board to lurk and felt like I was on a different planet. After reading the FAQ, it seems like a ton of work (running them through potentially 3 cycles in the washer?! I'm lucky if I am able to complete a load) and I saw the large possibility of repeat leaks (right now we are fairly leak free). Regardless, I'll still research because we go through a ton of diapers and we feel like there might be a better option. Anyone else that is/was on the fence?

  • It's not 3 washes - rinse, wash, extra rinse. Some peoples washers can be programmer to do it all with one button. I really find it no extra work and I'm pretty lazy.

  • I really thought I would CD but with daycare and not wanting to spend all my evenings after work doing laundry, I'm doing disposable.  If LO had a problem with diaper rash, I would consider switching.  At this point I don't see myself switching unless I become a SAHM.

    OP:  Love your LO's name

  • Oh, I should clarify that I live in a building with a shared basement coin-op washer and dryer-pretty basic with no extra rinse. I'm just imagining having to run 2 of these cycles+drying (3 hours...kind of difficult when it's something I couldn't just leave and get to later)

That would be a deal breaker for me. That's way different than having your own and just paying water / electric.
  • I CD, and I really don't find it to be that much extra work. That said, I have a fancy-schmancy HE front-loading washer that is literally steps away from the main living area in my house. If I had shared laundry, there's no way I'd do it. Add to that some stairs and that it's coin op? That would make it really hard!
  • I CD, and while it can be a little extra work, its not too bad, I am a SAHM and my husband and I split laundry duties. We and do diaper laundry every 2-3 days. We live in an apartment with a shared laundry room which is in another section of the complex and standard top loader washers. We do a rinse, wash and extra rinse, which can take a little extra time. The longest bit is drying them, but I don't sit around waiting for them.  I can understand the added difficulty with a laundry room, it can be a pain at times. It is doable, but not having an in-house washer sometimes tries my patience.

As far as leaks go, I haven't had any, and from what I've heard are pretty rare if you have a good cover/fit. I use prefolds and Thirsties covers, which I love.

  • I CD but do not do an extra rinse.  That seems like a waste of water IMO.  I wash hot rinse cold.  I don't find it to be that much extra work.  Yes it's another load of laundry but really - folding diapers is not that hard.

  • I too CD and don't find it to be much extra work.  I don't do all those extra washes and neither does my friend (who has a fancy shmancy washer/dryer).  As for the leaking, that should NOT be an issue if you have a good diaper with the right fit.  That said, pretty sure there's no way I would be doing this if I had shared laundry.  But I do love CDing and try to convert people whenever I can :D.

  • Honestly, I kind of didn't know many people did CD until I started chatting on the bump. I try to be as green as possible what with my Prius and recycling. I'm actually pretty curious but I know absolutely nothing about it so I couldn't even guess where to start!

  • I manually turn the washer on rinse (in the wash cycle), do a regular wash, and finally manually turn in back on rinse (in the wash cycle again). Once you find the diaper you like, you won't have any leaks. Fuzzibunz leak for us, but our friends love them. We like Bum Genius 4.0. Each kid will fit differently in each brand of diaper. You may want to do a diaper trial from Jillian's Closet. It's inexpensive and you get to try several different types and brands of diapers. It would also be a trial for you to see how the washing would go.

  • It's much easier than I thought. However... shared, coin-op laundry would be a deal breaker for me.

  • We CD, it's extremely easy.  I do laundry every 3rd day.  I bought a ton of cheap pre-folds & 8 covers.  I rinse & then to a hot load with 30 minute soak.  I don't even do the extra rinse everytime, I don't care.  I did do a lot of research while prego.

We are saving so much money & I do them when we go places too.  People think it's going to be a lot of work or gross but it's just not.

I honestly believe that diaper companies have some major conspiracy going on to keep the ease of CDing a secret.

    Same here.

I haven't had any leaks yet, even when she had some explosive poop.

    We use the Bumgenius 4.0
