f/u (again) to excessive spitting up

so E does have a dairy intolerance, and possibly soy too.  cutting out dairy is hard, but cutting out soy is even harder!  Stick out tongue  it's amazing though - after just a few days of no dairy and soy, he virtually doesn't spit up at all.  sigh.

eta - i'm a little irritated I didn't follow my instincts more strongly, given that i first suspected this over a month ago.  but his pedi totally blew me off when i brought it up with her, and the zantac did seem to help.  and it was so nice to be able to eat dairy again Stick out tongue  ...trust your mommy gut!

Re: f/u (again) to excessive spitting up

  • Glad you finally figured out what's causing it.

  • Glad you figured it out! It's hard to make such big changes.

I can't imagine having to cut out either. I briefly cut out dairy to see if it would help Bella but it didn't really. What seemed to help her most was the probiotics, but I was so thankful when I figured that out!

  • I'm sorry, elimination doesn't sound fun at all but I'm so glad you figured out and are following your instincts.  I'm always a big fan of finding the root cause of the problem and not just trying to find what can "treat" it, sorry that it took so long to find something that works for you guys.  Poor little guy, and poor mama for having to eliminate!!

  • Big hugs! I am glad you've figured it out though...so much better for little E! And sorry about the pedi...that sucks.

There are several restricted-diet BFing mamas on the AP board if you need a group of women to commiserate (and trade recipes/tips with)...I think the BFing board too. Hang in their mama! It won't be like this forever!

  • oh that sucks! haha I guess I should have read this before emailing you... I guess I'll have to think of something else that doesn't have lots of cheese in the recipe LOL

I'm sorry you can't eat dairy/soy for a while but glad you figured it out for his sake!

  • I had to do it too, though just dairy. It was awful, but it was an easy way to drop any remaining baby weight. And there actually were some tolerable products from Whole Foods that let me eat stuff like chocolate chip peanut butter cookies -- I missed desserts the most!

I was pretty vigilant for a few months, but then slowly started adding it back -- like not worrying about whey or other dairy add-ins. Still haven't had a glass of milk, but I am having some cheese again and thankfully we haven't seen any reactions to the more normal diet. GL!

  • Wow, yeah, I could probably avoid soy but I could never fully cut out dairy from my life. B had a LOT of spit-up when he was younger and I never knew that dairy intolerance was a possibility at the time. But he doesn't seem to spit up as much anymore (only once in a while) so maybe they'll grow out of it at some point--so like lola mentioned, you can try to add it back gradually sometime later and see how it goes...but in the meantime, I'm glad you found the culprits and hang in there!

  • I'm so glad you could identify what was wrong! I know it must be really frustrating to have to cut so much from your diet - like some pps mentioned, maybe he'll grow out of it as he gets older and you can gradually add it back in?
  • I did post on the AP board, and I will check out the BF'ing board too - thanks!  and will go to Whole Foods.  I've already started making a list of alternative products that are safe.

also, one of the AP ladies posted a recipe for chocolate cupcakes, which I will try soon - b/c I am a comfort eater Stick out tongue
