Coming home outfit- 2nd time moms

I purchased a comfy Carters outfit that I was going to use to bring the baby home in.  It's a onesie, pants, and cardigan because I figured it might be a little chilly.  Someone mentioned to me that newborns can't wear onesies for the first week or so b/c this would hurt their belly button.  I am a first time mom, so I am clueless about this.  Is that right?  Thanks for the help.

  • DS was a July baby; he lived in onesies from the start.

I skipped right to 0-3 clothing so they weren't tight fitting.

  • We did onesies from the beginning.  We had plenty of 0-3 month clothes for our daughter, but had to go out her first week home and get some newborn sized clothing.  0-3 was so big!  (She was not small, but not huge - 7 lbs, 6 oz.)

I already bought the coming home outfit for this baby and it includes a onesie. :)

  • DS was born at the end of June.  His coming home outfit was a polo onesie and shorts.  Most of the time at home he was in a kimono style shirt and a diaper though.

  • It won't hurt their belly button, onesies just freaked me out until her cord stump fell off, and I didn't like pulling the shirt down over her head so I used the kimono style shirts.

  • ANYTHING can rub on babies' belly buttons.  We used onesies and gowns....so easy to change diapers.  I think your take home outfit is perfect.

I don't think the stub hurts them.

  • Thank you everyone so much for the help! =)  I feel much better now.
  • Then wouldn't the same thing apply to sleepers and anything else that rubbed on their belly? Seems like that logic is a little flawed.

I would have to say that onesies are fine!! DD wore a sleeper home from the hospital and onesies underneath everything since day one! And we never had issues with her belly button. Plus, no matter what you do, diapers will rub up against them too. They are hard to avoid.
