Question about Maternity Insurance

Hello. I got a new insurance policy through my husband's work after LO was born because it was much cheaper BUT I just found out that it doesn't cover anything maternity. So, I switched back to BCBS which has a 12 month waiting period! I'm not pregnant, but DH and I wanted to ttc this year. Does anyone have any advice or know of any other options? TIA!

Re: Question about Maternity Insurance

  • Is this like disability insurance / insurance for if you are unable to work?

I have never heard of a 12 mo. waiting period. Is that to get in the program or before you can access the funds?

    Sounds fishy.

  • No, it's a standar Blue Cross policy. Pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition. All of their pre-existing conditions require a 12 month waiting period before coverage starts.
  • that really sucks. I always thought that if you were on a group plan they covered pregnancy even if you were pregnant before you got the policy. I know most individual plans have zero maternity coverage, but I think it's unusual for your group plan to consider pregnancy to be pre-existing.

ok, I read your OP backward...your individual plan has maternity but not your group? That is totally bizarre to me!

  • Oh - that is wrong on so many ways!

I agree! The group plan was with a company that offered no maternity insurance at all. Does anyone know a company with no or a shorter waiting period?

so you have to be insured for a full 12 months before you can get pregnant?

  • What state are you in?

I would just try to google your state + maternity rider without waiting period.

    That's really crappy.

What's your income?  Some states have plans, (similar but different to medicaid) for moms who don't have insurance.  In VA it's called Famis Moms.  You still have copays & stuff & I believe even a premium depending on income, but it's not as strict as other programs.

No, you can not deliver in the first 12 months of coverage. This is very common in the individual market, and I don't know any individual plans that do not require a minimum of 12 months before delivery. The OP best bet is to wait at least 3 months (and I would wait more, because even if you are due after the 12 month period but deliver early they will not cover it) before you TTC. This is not fishy, it is very standard. What is odd is the group plan not covering maternity.

  • I ran into this same problem when I took a leave of absence from my job and my husband is self employed.  Blue cross wouldn't cover me for 2 years because I had taken clomid with my 1st pregnancy.  I couldn't believe it!!!!

We ended up going with medical mutual.  I don't know what state you are in and if you have access to medical mutual.  There are ways around indivdual coverage to get group coverage.  Group coverage insurance is usually the only one that will cover maternity from the day your coverage begins, no waiting period.  It's so stressful.....it took me around 6 months to find the plan right for our family and its still not great......high deductable:(  Good Luck!

This is all state specific, so while this worked for you it may not work depending on what state the OP is in.

OP - The best option is to contact an insurance broker and have them help you. It is free to you and they can find the best maternity plan available to you.
