i am thinking of trying one for my niece but before i lay down like $25 for a book, i am curious if anyone has tried these? or have you received one as a gift?
she turned 3 in Dec and is really into books now. she will have a brother in June so i want to make sure she has a few things that are still just hers from me.

Re: has anyone tried the recordable storybooks?
I guess I should also say that they don't need to have direct light shining right on them, but they work best in a well lit area.
There are little holes on the inside of each page near the spine (two on the first recorded page, three on the second, ect). Light needs to hit those holes in order for the book to know to play the recording, and depending on how many holes the light hits is how it knows what page recording to play. I am not sure if I am doing a good job explaining it or not...sorry it is late, I may have to revisit this post tomorrow, lol!
My mom did one for DD for Christmas and it was a pain in the a$$ for her. The recording kept getting messed up (started on the wrong page, etc) and we never could figure out how to get it right. And yes, the book has a photosensor or something, so you have to have a lot of light for it to work.
I believe someone posted about this on the DC Nest board too (Secretservicewife, perhaps?) She was having similar problems. I guess try it at your own risk?
