?s about preschool

DH and I were talking about preschool last night (I know we have a while, but something made us think about it) and we were trying to figure out a few things.  DH and I both work full time and our in-home DC does not provide transportation anywhere.  Other than that, we all LOVE her.  Has anyone else run into this issue?  What did you have to do?  Given this area, I would be suprised if we were the only ones in this situation.

Does anyone know if any preschools in the Centreville area provide transportation?  Thanks!

  • I know others who have had another parent at the school drive their child to and from preschool.

  • When your DC gets older, you might find that he/she (sorry, don't know whether you have a little boy or a little girl) might be better suited for a day care center with an educational curriculum rather than in-home day care.  It seems like a lot of my friends who had kids that started out in in-home day care moved to more of a school based center care because they needed more social interaction and stimulation.  There are also all-day preschools and preschools that offer before and after care, so those are options too.

This is what happened with us with our oldest. Since we couldn't drive her everyday for a 2.5hr program while at the inhome daycare we switched her when the preschool year started to a full time montessori program. Although we were said to say goodbye to our daycare lady we knew it was best for her. With DD2 my DH is home with them so he is able to take her to preschool 3x week for the 3.5hrs she goes.

Ditto this exactly. There is someone at the in-home where DS goes that does this now. One of her neighbors has a child in the preschool class and picks up and drops off the child that goes to my DCP (it is PM preschool class, 12 - 3, so she picks him up at 11:45 and drops him back at 3:15). I am REALLY hoping we can figure out something like this when it's time for us to do preschool. Otherwise we'll switch her to a full day center type program.

  • It would be cost prohibitive for us to keep our in-home and pay for part time preschool.  We'll be switching to a preschool/daycare like Montessori or Goddard.

  • We found a preschool that offers full-day programs for about $200 more per month than the in-home daycare in our neighborhood. So, we are just going to put DD in the FT preschool once she is old enough.

  • I had a feeling that an all-day center w/ preschool would be the best option for us, but I wanted to see what others had done first.  The voices of experience tend to offer solutions that I had never thought of!  Plus, I was really hoping we would not have to deal with waiting-lists, etc., but oh well.  Thanks for all of the sage advice!

  • We switched DD #1 from her in-home to an all day preschool (Montessori) and that's what we'll do for kids #2 and #3.  Like pp said, in our case, the all day preschool was only $200 more a month than the in-home, so it doesn't break the bank.

And hopefully you will have an easy time of it - my experience is that there is not nearly the stress involved when looking at centers for an infant.  In fact there were no waiting lists when I was looking a all day preschools for her - we had it narrowed down to three places.  If you search in Jan./Feb/March of the year you want your kid to start, that's when preschools have their open houses and registrations.

I was worried about the whole wait-list thing so I am glad you mentioned it.   I'm hoping that our experience won't be so stressful too!  Thanks!
