As some of you know, Simon has to have surgery to have his Branchial Cleft Fistula removed on Monday morning, under general anesthesia. The surgery will take from 1.5 to 2 hours depending on how long the tract goes (up to his tonsils or down to his voice box). The hardest part will be the 40 minute drive to Reno since Simon can't have food or water after midnight, and then a long wait because the surgeon has 4 other procedures scheduled before his! (I think they're all ear tubes, so they expect to get him into surgery around 9:15 a.m.) He will be able to come home that night, and recovery will take about a week, during which time I'll be off work and staying with him. If complete excision isn't accomplished and even one cell is left behind, it could recur and he would need future surgery. Please keep Simon in your thoughts on Monday!

Thanks everyone, it's so nice to get such wonderful support from all you ladies because quite honestly DH is not being all that supportive, telling me it's a minor surgery and not understanding why I'm so anxious. Apparently his definition of major surgery is one that's more invasive, but I think this is pretty major given the length of surgery, the general anesthesia and the rarity of his birth defect and the even more rare subtype that Simon has with the hole low down on his neck rather than in his throat or ear. Also, he's had a cold for a few days and if his cough is still productive on Monday they may have to reschedule the surgery...fingers crossed that his cold gets better in the next 45 hours! I will definately keep everyone updated and thanks so much for all your good wishes!

Lots of thoughts and prayers headed your way. It doesn't matter how "minor" the procedure may be, it's always major when it's on your baby. I think that sometimes guys try to be cool when they are worried too. We are all here for you, and please keep us updated when you can.
