VBAC

Questions for my midwife (long)

Hello all, this is my first post to the VBAC board and I'm so excited to read everyone posts and know you all have the same questions/concerns/excitements and fears I do.

I had DS via c/s in May 2008 this was after I was induced 2 weeks prior to my due date, why, I can't remember all of the specifics but my amniotic fluid was measuring low. So after cervadil, then pitocin, no progression and then decreased fetal movement, not to mention 36 hours later from the start of this roller coaster the OB came in and said "Let's get this baby out", I couldn't say fast enough "Where the hell were you the day before, why'd I have to go through on this turmoil? YES!"

So now I'm 28 weeks into the 2nd pregnancy, I've changed providers and am only seeing a midwife who is supportive of my decision to try for a VBAC.

I forgot to mention that I had HBP and swelling start around 32 weeks w/DS and was put on bedrest and then had weekly NSTs and AFI checks. No preeclemsia. So my midwife last week said "let's see if your BP is getting ready to act up and then we can discuss labor/delivery options."

In the meantime, I've made a list of questions for my midwife:

1. What is going to rule out trying for VBAC?
2. Can I labor at home?
3. Can I go past my due date?
4. Can I at least go into labor in lieu of scheduling a c/s? (if c/s is going to be our only option)
5. Do I have the option for a c/s at ANY time? (be it before going into labor or during any point of labor)
6. What restrictions will I have? (fetal monitoring, cervical exams, IV, laboring out of bed...)
7. How long/far will we go with no progression before opting for c/s?

Is there any you would add?

Re: Questions for my midwife (long)

  • Definitely good questions on your list.  Some other things to think about are keeping yourself as healthy & low-risk as possible during your pregnancy will help your chances of a successful VBAC.  This includes regular physical exercise & a high protein, welll-balance diet (check out Brewer's Diet).  High protein during pregnancy has shown to prevent pre-eclampsia!  Also, drinking tons of water helps to replenish amniotic fluid, if your levels show low again.  Good luck to you!  I hope you get the birth experience you want.
