Movie-ing It Up

As a distraction from still being pregnant, I've taken to watching as many Oscar-nominated movies as I can.  This afternoon, DH and I are going to Black Swan.

Last weekend: King's Speech (really good, esp Colin Firth's acting).  Last night: The Kids Are All Right (ehh...)  Others: The Fighter (LOVED it, especially seeing Hottie Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale was awesome), Social Network (also thought was awesome), and Inception is arriving via Netflix Monday.

Anyone else an Oscar nerd or have any favs?

Anyone seen True Grit yet?

I'm looking forward to hopefully watching the Oscars with my little man (unless he cooks a whole 42 weeks that is)!

Re: Movie-ing It Up

  • what a great post!

i am a total Oscar nerd as well (i majored in film in college, so it's one of my hobbies)!  this is usually one of my favorite times of the year for that very reason...i love catching up on all the oscar movies.  so far, i've seen 6 out of the 10 best film nominations.

I loved Black Swan, and hope you do too!  Natalie Portman did an amazing job and i am sure she'll win again for best actress.  she is cleaning up at the other award shows, as she should be.

The Kids Are Alright was just that....alright.  Annette Bening was fabulous but the film itself didn't impress me.  i am a little surprised it is getting all this attention.  it really wasn't anything special.

The King's Speech was amazing.  Colin Firth should win for best actor and i would love to see Geoffrey Rush win as well, although he has some stiff competition in Christian Bale, who i hear is outstanding in The Fighter.  i still haven't seen that one, but i want to.

Toy Story 3 was super cute!

Inception was completely mind-blowing.  i saw it on opening weekend, so it's been a while but from everything i do remember about it, it deserves all the accolades it's getting.  the cinematography is insane...and the concept of the film is so creative.  i got lost about half way thru it, but i want to see it again.

The Social Network was surprisingly great.  i had this preconceived notion about it, that it was this teen melodrama that looked a little over-the-top, but it's actually very well made, well acted, and well written.  it's amazing how the soundtrack enhances things too...it really creates a suspenseful drama out of a courtroom lawsuit that could have been really boring to watch.

well, that's my assessment!  have fun watching the films.  i too am looking forward to the big award show...and especially watching it with my baby nearby!

  • Thanks!  Glad there is someone else out there who loves Oscars and gets all caught up with the movies too.

Black Swan was amazing.  We went to it tonight. Not only was Natalie Portman great in her role, but I thought the writing, directing, cinematography, all of it was awesome.  :)

And you have to go see The Fighter. LOVED it.  And Christian Bale was just awesome--I think he'd better get best supporting actor (really almost outshone Wahlberg IMO).
