Trouble TTC

Laparoscopy question...

Hi ladies. I am a long, long ago tttc'er from this site...3 years ago I was on here all the time, having trouble conceiving with my husband...since then, my life has totally changed, and unfortunately we are no longer together...

Although I'm not quite ready to ttc again with my new partner, I do have a question that I was hoping a few of you may be able to answer. To give you my background: My previous DX was 'unexplained infertility'...my h had no known issues...I was told that I had "borderline endometriosis" after an Endometrial Biopsy, HSG, blood work, etc. etc. I used Gonal-F with 3 failed IUIs...we never went further than that as I needed a "break" from the stress of ttc...

My question: Would it be strange (or is it even possible) to request a Laparoscopy to truly determine if/to what extent I may have Endo? Has anyone done this? Its one of those situations where I have some of the common symptoms and I have always been concerned that it is worse than they were able to tell from the Endo.biopsy...is it true that they can never tell the full extent without doing a Lap?

If anyone would mind sharing their experiences with this type of situation or offer any advice I would greatly appreciate it. I should also mention that I am about to turn 34, so I'm not exactly a 'spring chicken'....

sorry so long...

Re: Laparoscopy question...

  • First off, I'm sorry about what has happened.

I, myself, had inquired about having a lap done.  At first my RE was hesitant and wanted to see if the clomid would work.  Well, since the clomid didn't work he thought there may be something going on and agreed with my request.  Since you were told that you may have endo, it wouldn't hurt to ask.

    GL to you

  • I hope it's okay that I respond!  I haven't posted on here for a few months, I've just been lurking.

It is true that the only way that can tell for sure if you have endo is by doing a lap.  I also was dx with unexplained but a lot of spotting prior to AF so my RE was thinkinig it could be a LPD.  We did 3 rounds of clomid (great response but BFN) and 3 rounds of Gonal F (also a great response but all BFN).  During all of these treatments my cramps before and during AF got more painful.  I just had a lap done 2 weeks ago and I have Stage IV endo.

I really wish I would have listened to my gut and insisted on having a lap before wasting all of this time and $$ on treatments that wouldn't work.  My HSG showed I had clear tubes but the endo is so bad by ovaries were "glued" to my uterine wall and there was no way my eggs would ever make it out of the fallopian tubes.

Good luck with whatever you decide but if it were me, I would move on to the lap.  It really wasn't that bad

  • I am watching this thread now with interest since I am headed for a lap due to suspected endo. My HSG showed things looking distorted on my right side, so like Samm1008, I think I have things glued to where they should not be. Samm1008, were they able to clear it up your endo wtih surgery? I would so love to hear a success on this!

  • I would definitely proceed with a lap at this point. I too was Dx with "suspected" endo and after 3 failed IUIs, I didn't want to waste anymore time and money on treatments that had no shot at working. Lo and behold, they found Stage II endo, my right ovary was pinned to my pelvic wall (with it), and I also had polyps and fibroids in my uterus. I'm SO glad I had the surgery because now I feel like we know the full extent of what we're dealing with and hopefully we'll have better luck moving forward.

  • Thank you for all your helpful responses...my instict is telling me to talk to my gyno and at least inquire about the Lap...Even though I'm not ready to ttc yet, I would love to rule out or treat any endo they might discover now, so when I ttc things will (hopefully) be ready to go....
