Austen/Austin for a girl?

I'm not sure whether I could really do the boy-name-for-a-girl thing, but I've always been tempted to name a girl Austen. (I teach English and love Jane Austen, so there's some reasoning behind it.) This is pretty hypothetical, as I'm sure DH won't go for it anyway. :) WDYT?

  • Since you teach english and love Jane Austen, I say go for it!! It's a cute unique name in my opinion!
  • I prefer Jane as a tribute to your favorite author. Save Austin for a boy.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • How about Jane in honor of Jane Austen? I don't care for Austen/Austin for a girl.
  • I agree that you should go with Jane. Austin has such a cowboy feel to me (even though your reasons for choosing it are far from that), I think it would be awful on a sweet little girl!

Austin is a boys name. Oztyn makes my eyes hurt.

  • Jane Austen is my favorite author too. :) But, I would probably be apt to name my little girl after one of her heroines, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Marianne, Georgiana, Catherine....you know this list already.   Though I probably wouldn't use Lydia. lol

    This!

I know an Austin and Austen, both boys, so my association is it's all boy.

  • I'm a sucker for a boy name for a girl...LOL. I like it, especially after Jane Austen.
  • I don't mind some boys names on girls at all, but Austin just doesn't fit a little girl to me. Too "country".
  • I love Austen!

  • I think its cute.  I would definitely go with Austen since its a more unique spelling than the boy name Austin.  I would also do a very feminine middle name.

  • When you mention the Jane Austen thing, I sort of can see it and it does not seem too bad... but that poor child is going to be battling her whole life with the " I am not a boy thing."  You would have to spell it Austen I think, and give her an "overly girly" middle name to help balance it out... I dunno.  I sort of like it, yet would be concerned about the confusion.
  • I could see using Austen as a MN under those circumstances...maybe pair it with the more feminine/traditional name of one of her heroines as a FN, as PPs suggested above?  Ex: Elizabeth Austen, Catherine Austen, Elinor Austen, etc.

    I agree

  • No

The only girl Austin I know was pretty trashy....

If you want to use Austen as a way to kind of honor Jane Austen, I think it makes a great MN.

    I agree.

  • You know how people used to name their children George Washington Lastname? I'd name her Jane Austen Lastname. Or I would just use Jane as a first name. Austin has been used as a crossover boy-to-girl name in recent years, so using Austen just looks like you're going with that crowd.

BTW, I love Jane Austen! And if I were going to use a name to honor her (which I have definitely considered already), I would use either Jane or Elinor.

  • Nope.  Plenty of gorgeous girl names out there.  Don't take a last name/traditionally boys' name and give it to a little girl.

If you like Jane Austen so much, use Jane!

i know me too i had to sound it out to figure out what it was supposed to be lol

  • To be honest, I really do not like that name for a girl at all. Especially when Jane is such a sweet name! I also agree with the above suggestions to consider some of the names of the characters just in case you don't like Jane.

  • I think as long as its spelled with the E that it looks great for a girl.  And in this case it's not a boy name it's a surname with a masculine connotation.  And how could DH possibly object to naming his daughter, after such an intelligent, creative lady as Ms. Austen?Big Smile

  • I wouldn't use that as a girls name, but if it is special to you then go for it.
