Helmets for Plagiocephaly

Any other moms out there experiencing this with their LO?  My son just got scanned for a helmet this week and I've been an emotional wreck!

Re: Helmets for Plagiocephaly

  • My DD has been in a helmet for almost 3 months and trust me... it gets better.

I was an emotional wreck the first week she was in the helmet but have since grown to tolerate it.  your DS will not remember this time in the helmet and won't be aware of anyone's reaction in the community.  My DD wasn't phased by the helmet one bit from day one.

I have noticed that people in the community have either known someone with a helmet or thinks we're just over protective parents.  I can't tell you how many hilarious comments / questions I have heard.

"Does she fall down a lot and that's why you got the helmet for her?"

Husband to wife: "Did you see that baby in the helmet?  That's such a great idea!  Could you imagine if she tripped and hit the baby's head on a shelf?  That would be just awful!"

"Is that a helmet?"  "yes"  "That's bitchen!"

"Did you guys ride your bike here today?"

"Did that helmet come with the carrier?"

"Is that a helmet?"  "yes, she has a flat spot we're correcting with the helmet."  "that's a great idea!"  - as if I came up with the idea to use a helmet!  hehe

"Where did you get that helmet?  I want to get one for my DD!"

I have talked with a few other bumpies who also have babies in helmet.  Know that you are not alone.

  • I know I'm late to respond, I agree totallY with Qmommy!  We were in a helmet for 2 months.  We were definitely upset but did grow to tolerate it.

On his end, though, after the first few days it was totally part of him.  He was fine with it.  He would even have fun with it when he discovered he could make different sounds by tapping it against different objects!  :-)  Also, the first night he wore it overnight was the first time he actually STTN in almost 3 months (alas, it did not last and he went back to his old routine...but it was comforting to know that he was totally fine with the helmet!)

People do have all sorts of reactions.  Usually they were really funny or genuinely concerned and wanted to make sure he is doing OK or will be OK.  We found ourselves trying to make other people feel better and reassure them that he is fine and will be fine.  We explained the whole thing to people often.  Many poeple had seen other babies in helmets or personally knew someone in a helmet and just shared stories to reassure us.

Most importantly, remember that DC won't remember and it sets them up for a better, healthier future, so it's a good thing.

  • Thanks for sharing your stories, your words of encouragement are very inspiring.

I go to pick up my son's helmet in two weeks so if you have any suggestions/advise that you have learned from this whole experience, feel free to email me at: taylorcarly@sbcglobal.net.

    Thanks again!

    Carly
