Do I have to give Isabelle cereal? I'll be honest - Sophia got cereal in her bottle and rarely in a bowl except for breakfast mixed with fruit. Never for all her meals. We went right to pureed veggies.
I am at a loss at how I am going to up my supply to accomodate bottles at daycare and cereal a few times a day. Its just not possible. I can always put formula in it but since she is not familiar with the taste - will she reject it? I guess its worth a try but that is a lot to introduce at once. Someone recommended water but...eww, that cannot taste too great. Poor kid.
Thoughts? Advice?
Re: Cereal Question
I'm pretty sure from what I remember the only reason to give cereal is to get them used to eating before going to baby foods but not for any nutritional value. I gave Alexis cereal in her bottle for reflux but never in a bowl, I just went straight to the foods, like you.
I agree about ewwwww with the water. You could always try out the formula in the cereal at home a few times and see how it goes.

When Nicky was an infant my pedi told me to give cereal in the early stages of solids because the acids in fruits and veggies could cause diarrhea and diaper rash and the cereal helped neautralize it. When Adrianna started solids I figured why bother with cereal...its just filler, right?? Well, sure enough when I tried straight purees she got horrendous diarrhea and diaper rash.
Forgive me if this is a dumb question because you know I never BF'd, but can you mix the cereal with formula and save your BM for the bottles?
It is very interesting about using cereal to buffer acidity of other foods and prevent diarrhea/rash...i've never heard of this and none of the pedis i've worked with have recommended this. I never had an issue giving foods without cereal and developing diarrhea or rash either but this is good to know and will have to do a little research to see the mechanism.
It is true that cereal companies claim that their products are "fortified" but from my understanding, they are "fortified" with very nonabsorbable forms of elements such as iron. this means that what is actually absorbed into the child's system is very minimal and not of much value. If they were to use the good absorbable forms, then the cereal would taste more like polyvisol. Cereal is essentially a carbohydrate, which is converted into sugar in the body, and hence becomes fat.
I in no way want to open up a debate but thought it's important to be aware. ;)It may sound like i'm against cereal but I'm not...I gave Big E some cereal in his time and I would do the same with baby E. Like most things in life...moderation is a good thing.
Oh, and on using formula to mix cereal...there's no problem with that if someone chooses to do so.

Mixing it with formula is an option to me but I think it would defeat the purpose of smoothing the food transition with cereal since I would have to introduce formula AND cereal. Isabelle has not had formula since she was in the hospital and then it was less than an ounce.
I am still torn about this. I have time to think because I am not starting her on solids until closer to 6 months and right now she is not missing it. She is doing great on exclusive BM and does not seem hungry between feedings. I just wanted to start doing my research now.
That's great that she's EBF! You don't have to give cereal as a first food or even at all. That's really just a myth.
Andrew's first food was sweet potato off my plate, without butter. Avocado and banana are also great first foods. And actually if you express just a little of BM into fresh avocado it will help prevent it from turning brown.
When solids are introduced they are just complimentary foods to BM or formula. It's for practice. BM has way more calories and bioavailable nutrients than cereal or other solids.
You don't have to start off with three meals a day or even offer solids every single day. Some people don't bother to introduce 3 meals of solids until closer to 8-9 months. It depends on the baby.
Definitely do your research now but I would try not to stress about it too much. It will work out!
