Babies: 6 - 9 Months

School me: I don't understand sippy cups

DD is BF and we've been doing solids.

She BFs about 4 times per day (goes about 4 hours between feeds), and I offer her the boob 2x at night, which she *barely* eats (we start sleep training this week and I'm going to ask pedi on Monday about dropping her night feeds).

For solids, she's eating about 12 oz spread out over 3 meals.

I know she doesn't *need* water...right? But that's what I use in her sippy cup to practice. But we hardly practice, because I don't want her to drink water and not BF.

Should I let her go ahead and drink water?

I don;t understand the whole weaning thing. Will she space out her feedings more to the point that another on drops, or will she just drop one at a time? So would the water that is offered at meals replace the liquid she would take in at BF?

I'm confuzzled.

  • You could put BM in a sippy cup if you want to. When she first starts using the cup I doubt she will get enough in her mouth to quit a BF session.

  • You can put anything you want in the sippy cup to practice using it. Water is preferred. It's not like you're going to give your baby 4 ounces of water and expect them to drink it all. It's just for little sips at a time. Liam drinks from a sippy cup during solid food meals to help wash down his food.

Babies don't NEED water at this age, but it is not BAD for them in any way. And it should not be replacing your breastmilk and/or formula at this point.

  • I give my DD a sippy cup of water everyday. She is BF. She does LOVE water though. That said, over the course of a day, she probably only drinks a couple oz of water from it and still gets plenty of BM. It has, in no way, replaced BM.

  • We use water just for practice, but it isn't going well and she hasn't learned to suck yet, she just chews. I fill it the whole way so she doesn't have to tip as high. She doesn't know how to drink out of it well, otherwise I'd probably fill it with BM (oh gosh and gain some independence from DD?! might that finally be possible!? Can you tell this mommy is a little over the fact that DD never took a bottle?). Anyway, I would just fill it with water and practice, once she gets good at it you can fill it with BM. I can't imagine she would start guzzling down large amounts of water any time soon.

  • DD just got the hang of actually drinking out of her sippy cup the past couple of weeks (instead of just chewing on it).  She can only do it if I put her at an incline, she hasn't quite grasped the fact of tipping it up.  We put water in it and give it to her with dinner to help wash things down.  Since she's eating so much solid food she has dropped her bedtime bottle, but sometimes she needs a couple of ounces and I'll put it in her sippy just to help her with the transition from bottles.

Long story short, putting water in to help her practice will not affect her ability to BF.  She won't drink enough to make a difference.

  • I haven't started water or sippies with DS2 yet, but I just wanted to chime in with the other posters to say that practicing with a little bit of water won't affect BM consumption.

Based on your questions, I wanted to add that weaning doesn't have to do with no longer drinking milk or naturally dropping feedings.  If you are BF, weaning would get baby to transition from nursing to using only a bottle.

She will still need and drink plenty of milk (formula or BM) on generally the same schedule for a long while, even with solid meals, snacks, and water added into the mix (during the day...night feedings vary between babies/families).

    HTH!

  • Thanks for your replies. I will ask the pedi on Monday also, but based on what all of you have said, I will continue to let her practice with water and not worry about it affecting BFing.

I guess this is yet another example where  I should stop over-thinking things and just follow DD's cues :o)
