2nd Trimester

Miralax users... come in please

Ok this may be TMI, but seriously never had this issue before.  I'm usually like clock work, but the last couple weeks have been awful.  When I do go, it feels like shards of glass passing and I feel like I'm pushing out a bowling ball!  I've tried taking OTC stool softners/laxatives that are supposedly "natura" and I've increased my fiber intake. NO DICE!  My stomach feels so bloated and I keep having the "poop pains".  Someone recommended I try Miralax but is it safe for pg?  Does it work?  How much do you recommend?  Taste?

Re: Miralax users... come in please

  • I'm in the same situation. I used to go regularly but now I'm starting to go less often. But I know it's completely normal, most people i talked to told me that they were lucky to go once a week. But I've never tried Miralax or anything but I think I might have to start!

  • I had terrible issues, during the 1st tri, stool softners did nothing, I finally got fed up and took Senekot it is considered natural, it's gentle and my OB said it was fine, she also said I could take Miralax, they both work over night. My issue got so bad, I ended up with hemis which it sounds like you have as well, with the shards of glass description. I would go ahead and take some drink lots of water, and be prepared for a few hours at home tomorrow morning. The relief I felt was so worth it! Also I tried all the of the natural things as well, prunes, grapes, more fiber, 100 ounces or more of water, nothing worked. Although after I took the Senekot and cleared my system, my body seemed to correct itself. Hope this helps!  Ohh one last thing start with the smallest dose recommended at first, you can always take more, but the more you take the better chance of cramping.

  • After not going for 4 days in my 1st tri I called my OB and they said i could take Miralax. I did....followed the instructions and the next day I finally went. Although, I experienced the worst cramps I have ever felt. After all was said and done I felt much better after I went to the bathroom.

  • I use it regularly. Take it, with water...can leave a funky taste afterwards but doesn't taste bad. It's like a cap full of the stuff and it'll work. It works well and is approved by my doc at least.

  • I've taken Miralax in all of my pregnancies.  It's totally safe.  It goes stays in your gut and is absorbed into the intestine without ever entering your bloodstream.  The bottle says take it once a day, but my dr says twice a day.  It usually takes a day or two to work.  It never causes cramping or urgent trips to the bathroom, but it does work great.  I highly recommend it.

I find it best when mixed with a hot drink, like hot cocoa or hot tea.  It dissolves completely in any drink, hot or cold and it is tasteless.  However, when mixed with a cold drink, it gives it a sort of slimey texture.  Could just be me.  I'm really picky about textures in things I eat or drink.

Good luck!  I've been there.  I does get better!!

  • I've recently started using Cetracil because I am also having the same problem. My Dr. said to take 2 a day and it would help and it has. Hope this helps!
  • Yes, my doctor actually told me to take Miralax every day.  I don't do that (it's expensive!), but I've found that it works very well when I need it.  It takes a day or two to work, so don't get discouraged if it doesn't give you immediate results - keep taking it until it works.  If you do want something quicker, try Milk of Magnesia.  My doctor also said this was safe.  I take 2 Tbsp before bed, and while it makes me gassy and more crampy than the Miralax, I do get results the next morning.  Good luck!!

ETA:  As for the taste, Miralax is tasteless and dissolves completely in any beverage.  Milk of mag comes in a couple different flavors.  I find the cherry the most tolerable.  It's not pleasant, but just take it like a shot and chase with lots of water!

  • My dr recommended I try Metamucil first, eating fruit with skin, baked potatoes with skin, just more fiber all around, PLUS drink more fluids. He said you have to bulk up on fiber AND soften it with fluids to keep things moving along.

  • I ended up in the ER w/ an impacted bowel around 16 weeks. And they were shocked that I hadn't been taking Miralax before that (I had been on three Colace a day with no luck.)

They put me on Miralax once a day, everyday, and my OB insisted on this as well. I did so for about four weeks, and now everything is moving great. I do take it here and there if I feel like I'm getting stopped again - two enimas and a manual disimpaction later, and you learn.

It tastes like nothing - I found if I let it dissolve at least a few minutes in my water, that helped a lot. I also drank it in a sparkling water, the carbonation helped dissolve the powder and mask the whole thing. It was fine.

  • I was having major problems going during first tri.  My record was 5 days w/no BM.  Yuck.  My doc recommended taking Miralax daily until things got better, and also using Dulcolax as needed.

My experience was: Miralax was gentle.  I took it, and had my first BM 2 days later.  I took it daily for a few weeks.  For me, Dulcolax was the devil!  It said it would naturally and comfortably produce a BM within 8-12 hours.  2 hours after I took it, I woke up to horrible stomach cramps and had explosive diarrhea for about 40 minutes.  It was awful.

Sorry that is TMI, but I think the thread warrants it.  :)  Good luck!

  • I was having the same problem 4 days without a BM.  The nurse midwife told me to take psyllium fiber.  Its a natural laxative and found right beside the metamucil. It has no taste but you need to drink fast because it will thicken up quickly. It worked for me. Thank Goodness!

OH NO! That just sounds horrible. I have to admit though...this gave me a little giggle. I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time...but good-gracious! Those laxatives can really do a number on us, huh?! Hope you're great now!
