Parenting after 35

Switching to 1 Nap per Day

I think at almost 18 months (in 10 days) we're almost there.  Aaron had been taking 2 naps per day--waking at 6:30 am, napping from 9 am - 10 am and then again from 2 pm to 3:30 pm.

But for the last few days, he's been waking at 7/7:15 am and has NOT wanted to nap in the morning and has only had one nap. He was super fussy from 11 to 11:45 (hungry) but after he had an early lunch, I put him down at 12:30 and he slept until 2:20.  Though last weekend his only nap was from 10:30 to 12:30... so I think he hasn't figured out his "schedule" yet.

I just hope he's getting enough sleep. He averages 10-10.5 hours at night and naps for 1.5-2 hours: total sleep per day is (on avg.) 12.5 hours.

Re: Switching to 1 Nap per Day

  • Sarah switched to one nap per day when she was 16 months old. She just would not fall asleep for her morning nap, just sit in her crib and play. Her schedule now is like this:

Wake 7:30-8, nap 12-3, bedtime 7. She needs a lot of sleep but I know other kids her age sleep a lot less (similar to what Aaron sleeps).

  • Sounds like he's sorting himself out.

M had been on one nap a day for months until this cold knocked him back to two.

  • We switched L to one nap a day a couple weeks ago. The first few days he got a little tired and crabby before bedtime, but it has made an * enormous* difference in how easy he falls asleep now!

He used to fuss and cry for a good 30-45 mins each time we put him down, now he goes right down without a peep and sleeps great!

His bedtime is 6, he will wake for a bottle sometime between 3-5am and go back down until between 7-8. Takes a nap from 11-1 then goes down for the night at 6.

  • Maybe it's just teething and he's not trying to drop his morning nap.  Is he still rubbing his eyes and yawning around naptime?

  • Lucky ladies. Fiona has been napping once a day since she turned one...and sometimes it's a battle to get her to take that nap. Although it doesn't seem to affect her mood. She's pleasant and will just sleep later in the morning if she skips her nap.
  • Margaux is working toward one.  Sometimes she wants to nap at 11, then again at 4, and sometimes she just goes for one big one around 2.  Today was a big 2pm nap.

  • I was totally going by Aaron's cues for naps.  He usually is in bed at night by 8 pm or so and he was waking by 6:30 am?so 10.5 hours of sleep.  When he wakes at 6:30, he's usually asleep by 9:30 am for about an hour (for his morning nap).  Then he was napping for anywhere from 1-2 hours in the afternoon, going down around 1:30 - 2 pm (no "set" time, just based on his cues).

But on Wednesday, when I was home in the AM during the freezing rain, he napped from 10:30 pm to 12:00 pm and later in the day from 3:30 until nearly 5.  Not his norm... but he is cutting 5 teeth right now.

The last 2 days, he woke after 7 am and didn't take a morning nap. I put him down after lunch (12:30 pm) and both days he napped for about 2 hours. So I'm guessing he's just working his way to 1 nap.

I have to admit that I LIKED the morning nap because *I* could nap for an hour. Since my work hours are flexible (and now my house is 4 miles from my office) it wasn't bad. But I'll switch it up as long as he's OK.

  • Yes, it looks like he is very close to 1 nap/day.

  • Adrian has been taking only 1 nap since he was about 13 months or so. He just didn't want to nap in the AM anymore. No matter how early or late we put him to bed at night, he still wakes up around 6:30 or 7am, he's just an early riser! He gets about 10-11 hrs at night (8:30pm-6:30am) and then about 2-2.5 hrs in the afternoon (noon to 2pm). Some days his naps are longer, depending on how tired he is, but he always sleeps the same amount at night, like clockwork. DH is hell-bent on putting him to bed at 10 so he'll sleep late in the morning, but it doesn't work! Adrian still gets up early, so I prefer to put him to bed earlier so we can all take a break and rest.

  • Ada bounced back and forth between two and one for a couple of months - she has finally settled on her morning nap only. Usually this happens about 4 or so hours after she wakes up in the morning and she sleeps anywhere between 1.5 - 3 hours.
