Update to "And I think my water broke..."

imagemisskassielynn:
Good luck (on a side note I guess you were a touch hasty with your I won't go into labor before 41 weeks eh? Wink I am super excited for you that you were wrong though!)

Thanks for all the well wishes girls! Kassie, this is just like the night before we got our BFP and I was convinced it was actually my period starting. I somehow use reverse psychology on myself without knowing it! ;)

Just cleaned up around the house a bit and now I'm going to do some laundry. No contractions yet... still just crampy now and then. Still leaking a good amount of fluid though. On a funny note, I haven't worn pads since I first got my period in junior high. I couldn't even remember how to put one on and have since gone through four pairs of pajama pants. I think I got it figured out now!

Re: Update to "And I think my water broke..."

  • HAHA, I just pictured myself sitting in the bathroom on the toilet trying to figure out how to put a pad on! Maybe I will go investigate the huge pads I bought in case my water broke....

Sorry the contractions haven't started yet, I hope they do so you won't need a ton of interventions! Tell DH to get his booty in the laundry room and wash some pajama pants, you are gonna want those when you get home!

ETA: OH and duh... GOOD LUCK!

  • So even if your water breaks/leaks you don't have to hurry and get to the hospital? I thought you did because infection could set in? When should you go then? Once your contractions are timable? What if you don't get them?

I have been thinking all morning what would happen if I didn't notice my waterbreaking and what I would do... lol

  • I'd say have sex, but if your water is really gone then that's not a good idea. How about a walk around the grocery store? ;) Worked for me...

Nope not like in the movies - water breaks = rush to the hospital! The doctor said they'll give me up to 24 hours to start contracting on my own before I have to go in. I want a med-free birth, so that might change things too. The plan is to stay home as long as possible, and hopefully I'll start contractions/dilating and will go into the hospital when they are at 4-1-1 (four minutes apart, lasting at least a minute, for at least an hour long) and super intense. Who knows what will happen though...

  • I thought they told us that in our childbirth class, about the infection....

Plus my mother told me the same- but she also told me to turn the babies head to the side when he sleeps. WTF! So I don't really take her advice....

She's going to fight me when I tell her that NO I don't have to run to the hospital right away! I just won't tell her it broke until my contractions set in. LOL

Wow, really? The nurse in my birthing class said to definitely go to the hospital if my water breaks. They will only go 18 hours before delivery due to risk of infection.

  • Good luck! If my water breaks first, I'll be waiting around the house as well instead of rushing right in. I hope you have a wonderful med free birth :)

  • Maybe it only matters if you are GBS+?  That's what I thought...

Good luck, I wish you painless labor vibes!

  • Hi ladies, Im butting here so apologies.

I am a NICU/Postpartum RN. if your water breaks you should go to L&D because of infection. If your water is broken for a long time, the pediatrician will most likely order at least 48hrs of antibiotics and lab work for the infant. This will prolong your hospital stay. The antibiotics can last 7-14 days if after 48hrs there is growth on the labs that are drawn. Just thought I would share

  • My doctor tells me every week reasons to call or come in, one of them is if your water breaks...but maybe it's different depending on the doctor? I know for me I would have to come in right away because I have to be put on group b strep antibiotics. Good luck!

    Thanks for the info!

  • My doctor said if mine breaks to call ahead so they can prep a room. But definitely to come in once it breaks, but I am also GBS+.

  • The instructions from my doctor say to call as soon as my water breaks.  So, I don't know if they would tell me to go in or if they would give me a certain amount of time to see if labor starts before going in.  I know they want to deliver by 24 hours after the water breaks, so there's only so long they could wait before doing something to help me progress.

This exactly :)  And no internals unless really needed.

  • From what I've read about childbirth, it really depends on you and your caregiver's philosophy whether you need to rush to the hospital after your water breaks.  Some caregivers are more concerned about infection than others.  Generally speaking, a more traditional medical practitioner/OB is going to want you to come pretty quickly, but a more natural-oriented doc or a midwife is more likely to be cool with letting you wait 24 hours.

Anyway, Tempewick, good luck and keep us updated!!!
