I had my 36/37 wk appt last night and received the news that my GBS test came back positive. I know it's not a huge deal, and my doctor even said so. He said that 1 of 3 women test positive for it and all it means is that I will receive intravenous antibiotics while I am in labor. This is the first obstacle I've crossed during this pregnancy (I've had a pretty easy pregnancy), so I can't help but feel nervous about it.
Has any 2nd time moms dealt with this before? Besides the antibiotics, are there any other special precautions the medical staff take while delivering the baby and when the baby is born? I guess I was a little shocked last night when the doctor told me, so I didn't think of these questions at the time. I do plan to ask him at my appt next week though.
Thanks!
Re: Boooo...Group B Strep +
Yeah I was disappointed when I found out I was GBS+ again since I want as little intervention as possible. I was + with my first too and no, no extra precautions, just the antibiotics through an IV every 4 hours. I was in early labor for awhile and the only advice my MW gave was to go in if my water broke which it did and I was only at a 3 but was admitted to start the antibiotics...didn't progress enough, started on pitocin the next morning, eventually got to a 10, pushed for 2.5 hours and ended up with a cs. (Okay I know that sounds scary, was not meant to be at all, it doesn't have to go that way).
But this time I asked my OB if I was GBS+ and my water broke when would I need to go in. She said she would give me a few hours to come in if I wanted. So at least if I want to stay home, take a shower, get ready, try to progress a little more at home (if I'm not already in heavy labor) I can. With my first I was kind of relieved when my water broke because I had been having contractions for 24 hours or so and wanted to know where I was at, so I kind of freaked out and went straight in.
My OB also said to make sure they put the IV(hep loc) somewhere in my forearm if I didn't want it to bug me while I wasn't on antibiotics/walking around etc. She said a lot of times they try to put it low on your wrist and that can be annoying.
