2nd Trimester

Anyone else's family like this....

I love my family dearly but sometimes they are just crazy - particularly when it comes to supersitions. They can be very old school Irish Catholic and set in their ways, and they all think I'm crazy because I "insist on being different". Don't even get me started about that fact that I get married outside (i.e. not in a church) by a friend of ours who became a JP for the day. Note that for all the hoopla beforehand my family had a great time and admitted it was one of the nicest weddings they had been to.

So from the very beginning of this pregnancy, my mom has warned me about not jinxing myself by looking at baby stuff too early, etc. I tried to explain to her that the only thing I have control over is my body and how I take care of it to ensure the healthiest environment for the baby to grown in, and that looking at baby stuff even though I was only 6 weeks was not going to hurt the baby.

Now that I'm 23 weeks I thought we were past most of that stuff until it came time to get baby's furniture. My parents were kind enough to offer to buy us any furniture we wanted up to $800 since this is what they did for my sister. I found the set I liked and a good deal on it so I convinced my mom to order it even though she wasn't loving the idea of getting it so early. Luckily, she's also a sucker for a good deal. So now we have the furniture and I said something about DH and I setting up the crib this weekend, and of course, her response is "oh....if I were you I'd wait a few months until you're farther along". I explained that I wanted to put it together now to make sure everything was okay in case we needed to return it, etc. I'll admit it though - I'm really just impatient and want to finish the nursery now while I'm still feeling up to it.

This doesn't really bother me because I'm used to my mother by now and we have a good relationship so when she says crazy stuff I just laugh at her and do what I want anyways. What surprised me though was that my sister agreed with her. She was like "yeah...I totally wouldn't put the crib up before at least 27 weeks...you just never know." Okay. While I get that bad stuff can and does happen, I prefer to remain optimistic. I know they are just being protective of me but sometimes I really can't do anything but shake my head at their craziness.

  • My family is driving me friggen crazy right now for a number of reasons. Wish I could run away to another country.

  • My MIL is the same way.  She's Jewish, and they're very susperstitious about having anything baby related in the house or even really discussing LO before she is born.  I'm not Jewish, so I don't really understand the superstition, but I try to respect it.  My baby shower was last weekend, and although my MIL went out of her comfort zone to buy stuff for the baby (which we totally appreciate), she insisted on keeping it at her house (about 200 miles away) until the baby actually arrives.  Whatever floats her boat lol.

  • DH is from a big family (5 kids) and I've heard these sooo many time..."Babies in our family all have big heads!" "Our great grandma was 13 lbs at birth, better watch out!"

Yeah, because my genetics have no say whatsoever in baby's size. And I'm pretty sure your great grandma was the vast exception to the rule. Just because your family is a little bit Irish doesn't mean my baby's gonna be massive. Please show some intelligence. Gah.

  • I was raised in south Texas and they are really bad about it there too.  Probably worse.  My best friend's family is over the top when it comes to all the superstition stuff.  Her mom use to get after me all the time about every little thing I do.  If I moved, I have to buy a new broom or it's bad luck.  If you sweep your feet you'll never get married and blah blah blah.  I swept my feet many times and am happily married thank you very much, but her own daughter who listens to it all has never been married once.  When she was pg some guy scared her with a snake and the family swore the baby was going to be born deaf because of this.  Goodness I could tell you a whole book of things!  You just gotten grin and bear it I guess.  Do what you want and try to look after her feelings at the same time is all I can advise.  Good luck! =D

  • I love that people like this don't think about the fact that you are obviously very attatched to your pregnancy and this baby, and a loss at this time would be just as tragic for you, whether or not you have clothes and a crib set up. I think what is far more "unlucky" is not allowing yourself to get excited about, attatched to, and prepare for this baby as best as you can. I think it would be more "harmful" to the baby to expect the worst this far into your pregnancy. This being said, I understand waiting a while just in case, but by the time you are about 14 weeks or so the likelyhood of having a healthy child carried to term is overwhelming, and you should be allowed to get excited. It's like getting married and expecting a divorce. They happen but you have to put your heart into it it you really want it to work and expect the best. Except, it's more likely you'll have a healthy baby than a long marrige. Maybe that was a bad comparison lol!

Ditto.  First of all, I am Jewish, so I'm slightly superstitious, but not to the extent of my MIL and FIL.  They are old school Jewish and very very very superstitious.  They also told us not to buy anything too early, and they don't tell many people of our pregnancy for fear of 'bad eyes' (a.k.a. envious eyes, whatever you want to call it, LOL).

Don't get me started on our wedding.  I had a 'black/white' themed wedding, and that was so difficult for them to accept because they think 'black' is a bad color and well...you know what it signifies.  he he he.

I wouldn't let it get to you, it doesn't bother me.   I find it funny, and ultimately I do whatever I want.  I just happen to choose not to buy anything till the 3rd trimester.  I went to a babies-r-us at around 10 weeks, walked around just to get an idea of prices/budget, and I felt a bit out of place.  I swear I was the only one there without a giant baby bump.  I think most people (superstitious or not) do tend to buy a lot of stuff closer to the end.  I have to admit, I would find it weird if I saw a woman with a fully decorated nursery who was only in her first trimester. (not you, since your in the 2nd)
