Breastmilk: Fridge vs. Freezer

Audrey goes to DC next on Tuesday, and I'm wondering what I should do with the BM I'm pumping today while she's at DC.

Is it better to keep BM in the fridge if it's only a few days or should it be frozen if it's not going to be used right away?

I could probably find this by researching myself, but surely someone here already knows! :)

Re: Breastmilk: Fridge vs. Freezer

  • I freeze the milk I make and give the oldest (from the freezer) to drink during the day. I rotate it out. Since you'll still be BFing, your DD will still be getting plenty of fresh milk.

good luck going back to work!

  • Ditto Sofka.  I pretty much freeze everything and use the older stuff as I go.

Lindsey, I still have a freezer full of milk - I probably need to give up the ghost on thinking DS is going to every be able to take it.  Did you mention someone you knew locally who may need donated milk?

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • M takes 3 bottles a day, and I try to give him 2 fresh and 1 frozen. Then I freeze the extra fresh milk for later.

  • I did things a little differently. I almost always used the milk I pumped the following day and would freeze any extra. I used my freezer stash for emergencies, nights out, etc. I had a high lapse and I preferred to give fresh milk.

  • According to kellymom, you can keep milk in the refrigerator up to 8 days.  I used to keep my Friday pumped milk in the fridge until Monday, but occasionally would have milk in the fridge longer than that if I got much ahead of DD's needs.
