Highlights--to do or not to do

I have heard a mix review of whether or not to color hair during pregnancy.  I had a friend get her hair done last week and she had a C-section yesterday.

I have only gotten highlights and heard that was the safest bet--did you ladies get your hair colored later in the pregnancy (I am 35 weeks) or did you just avoid it and wait.  Just trying to get opinions of other moms.

Re: Highlights--to do or not to do

  • I had full-color done at 25 weeks. My Dr said it was perfectly fine. I just wanted to avoid it in the 1st tri. I am not doing it again until after she's born but I think once was OK. Highlights should be especially OK since they use foil right? It's not sitting on your scalp?

  • I meant to wait out the 1st tri and then color my hair again as soon as I was in 2nd tri, but I didn't get around to it until about 20 weeks. I do all-over color at home. I think it depends on what you're comfortable with, but I think it's fine.

  • Now is a great time because in a couple weeks you won't have the time or motivation!!

Seriously, I was intending to have mine done around then, but I delivered early.  My dr said there is no harm in hair coloring, the only issue is that during the first trimester some of the hormones can effect how the color turns out.

  • Thanks ladies!!  Weezie, I agree--I am sure I will have every intention to get it done after, but I am sure it'll be the last thing on my mind.  Also, you never know if your LO will come early.  Thanks for all the advice, I just wanted to hear what other moms or moms-to-be thought.  I don't want to seem vain, but it's something that I like doing once in a while and I am going on almost 9 months of NOTHING!  Not even a haircut.

  • I got highlights...I've heard you should avoid at home coloring..if you are going to do it I would go somewhere.  I felt comfortable doing it because the place I go uses organic products.

Where do you go?  Is it in Harford CO?  Just curious I was not aware of an organic salon in HarCO

  • I did it as soon as I could.  I did it at home too, but used the ammonia free dyes (they don't last as long).

I think you're fine especially at 35 wks.  Right now, it's just getting that extra fat on the baby but overall (minus maybe the lungs just finishing up developing) the baby is ready.
