Babies: 0 - 3 Months

diaper change logistics question from an almost-mom

Kind of a silly question, but need advice from those of you with outside babies :)

I'm trying to get DH to come around to the fact that while LO is sleeping in our room (which I'd like to do for a minimum of 3 months), we'll want to change her in our room during middle of the night feedings, rather then trek to her room to use the changing table.  So for those of you who do that, do you have a second diaper pail?  We bought a Diaper Dekor for the nursery -- do I need another one?  Or do I just hang a grocery bag on the doornob for middle of the night use and then toss the dirty diapers in the Diaper Dekor in the morning?  TIA...

Re: diaper change logistics question from an almost-mom

  • Honestly when I change lo in the middle of the night on our bed I just toss the diaper on the floor then throw it away in the morning.

  • We have double sinks in our bathroom so we set up a towel in between to change her on. Im not a fan of diaper pails- we use a ss simple human trash can and change the bag daily.

This is for all the caterpillars that never became butterflies. And for all the butterflies that never felt the wind in their wings. And for all the hearts that had hopes and dreams of a wondrous flight together.
  • We just rolled the diapers up into little "diaper pods" as we call them, and left them on the floor until the morning. Then we toss them into the Diaper Genie. I don't think you would need a second diaper pail. Can you just move the one you have the in the nursery into your room?

  • We have a small trash can with a lid...and I only put pee diapers in it. Usually he doesn't poop in the middle of the night, but if he does I take it to the diaper pail right then.

  • We just kept them in the room.  If there was one that particularily rancid, one of us ran it down to the nursery.

  • We usually trek to her room all the way across the hall because her room has a lot of stuff on the walls and what not and she LOVES to look at that stuff. Otherwise, if she's not in a good mood, she'll start screaming (she hates diaper changes lol). Plus all of the diaper changing stuff is already at her changing table, so it's a lot easier. But yea, I agree you can just wrap it up securely and dump it in the morning.
  • I go to the baby's room and change them on the changing table.  I try really hard not to turn on any lights in our room because I let my husband sleep.  Since he's working and I'm not (right now at least) and I'm breastfeeding, I don't see any reason to wake him up.  I get up, change the diaper and feed him in another room.  He's so sleepy when feeding that I have to turn on lights anyhow and tickle him and talk to him, etc. to get him to eat properly.  Also, we have to use a nipple shield and I still need to see what I'm doing.  I thought I would change diapers and feed in our room when I was pregnant...it didn't work out that way though.  I wouldn't buy more stuff than you really need until you know for sure if it will work.

  • We used a grocery bag when we were doing disposables.  I never change LO in her room. It's either in our room or on the floor in the living room.  Usually it's on the floor in the living room.

We also toss them on the floor until morning. She doesn't sleep with us regularly, but it's not a big deal to throw them out when you wake up. But if she's sleeping in your room every night why not just move the diaper pail?

  • Thanks for all the quick responses!  Sounds like it won't be too much of a problem to just throw out the diapers in the morning.

This exactly. Most times I don't even need to get out of bed :)

  • We've done a little bit of a combination of what other pp's have said....1) We moved the diaper pail to our room. We don't really change her in her room at all. 2) If it's really late and I'm particularly lazy, i'll toss them in the floor and put in the diaper pail in the morning.

I like the pp's idea of using a bag to put them in until morning as well. I just don't see how buying two diaper pails and two sets of bags, etc can be cost effective. Spend that money on something else!!

  • Honestly we haven't changed LO in her room yet. We just change her in our room and throw them in the trash can. We EBF so I rarely notice a smell.
  • We would walk all the way to her room to change her at first, but that got old REAL quick! Plus I found that because it's colder and brighter in there it would wake her up more and she had a harder time falling back to sleep.

Now I change her in the PNP changing area thing, and just leave a pile there and throw them out in the morning. We have dogs so there's no way we could leave them on the floor. They would be eaten by morning.

  • Well, I'm guessing this might be affected by if you BF or FF. We FF, so we have to get up to get his bottle in the middle of the night anyway. So, I leave our room so DH can stay asleep. I found out right away when we got home that the PNP changing table was too low for me because I had postpartum back pain. So, we always change LO in his room.
