Had to take DS to the doc...

My son was and still is acting like  nothing is bothering him which is good. But he called me into the bathroom today. (he needed help getting TP out of the cupboard)  While I was in there I noticed that the color of his stool was not the right color. White.  I knew this wasn't a good sign because his doc always asked me about the colors of his BM, and at one point she told me if it was white or black that I would need to have him seen. So, of course I freaked out. I'm pretty sure that hormones made it worse but I don't care.

Well they took blood and all the tests came back normal, so now we have to play the wait and see game. They couldn't find anything wrong today, but we are supposed to watch him over the weekend. If the white stools continue or he gets a fever he will have to be seen again. He will probably have to see a peds GI if the white stools don't stop. I am trying to keep my head up. I have to keep telling myself that everything is OK and its just a fluke or I will freak out. I really don't want to freak out anymore than I did.

Have any of you other mommys had to deal with anything like this with your kids?

  • I have actually never heard of this problem before... Did they say what could be causing the white stools?  I hope they figure everything out and that it's not a big deal.  Good luck to you and your son!

  • White stools can be cause by a number of problems. The main one being a problems with the liver. For example, he liver not producing enough bile, hepatitis A etc. Also gall stones and cysts have been known to cause white stools also. There are many many more, some serious some not.  Or it could just be a one time thing. Which is what I am hoping for.

  • i forgot to mention this one. sorry.

It could also be caused by infections that started elsewhere that could be causeing the liver enzymes to change but that is easily fixed.

  • T&P's for your son's speedy return to normal stools. I'd be scared, too.

  • White stools are due to a lack of pigmentation. Our stools are coloured by dead or broken down red blood cells/hemoglobin. Usually, grey/gray stool can be traced to an issue pertaining to the liver as it is a direct result of lack of processed hemoglobin.

  • Have you by any chance giving him tums or another type antacid?  I had given my son child's pepto chewable and his stool was white after that.  I have read about children getting into tums and their stool being white!  My sons stool has been light in color but never white unless he's had tums.
  • This preg is my first child, so I don't have personal mom experience with it, but my younger step-brother had this, as a result of mal-apsorbtion of nutrients, we later found out he has an allergy to soy. T&P coming your way!! Hopefully it's minor & he'll be a-okay! :)
