Bottles Question

In my quest to figure out what we will register for I thought I would ask you ladies which brand/type of bottles you use?  I have already done my research but I thought I would check to get some feedback from you all as well. TIA :)

Re: Bottles Question

  • I only use medela bottles since they hook directly to the pump and I EP. We got dr. brown's, avent and playtex at our showers but I returned them after realizing the medela ones worked well for us both : )

  • We use Playtex dropins, but if we have another LO I may try Dr. Brown's.  I love the dropins because they're easy to clean and DD likes them (and I got a ton of the outer shells really cheap at a mom's sale), but the liners are admittedly wasteful and an extra expense.

  • We use Medela. The only downside is that you have to give the bottle a break every few minutes to let it regain some air because the nipple collapses, but it's not a big deal.

We got Avent and Playtex drop-ins as backups to try too but we've never once used them. The Medela ones are just so easy because I pump into them at work, refrigerate them overnight, and send them to the sitter in the morning.

One word of warning - once I went back to work, I got more bottles, and I figured I'd get the 8 oz ones instead of the 5 ozers because DD would eventually probably take more than 5 oz at a time. I realized after a while that the 8 oz bottles come with medium flow nipples, not slow. I accidentally mixed them in with the slow flow ones, but DD's never noticed the difference. She uses both the slow flow and medium flow with no problem.

  • we use evenflo comfi nurser bottles.   We bought the playtex ventaire at first and there were just too many parts and way too much leaking going on!  I quickly figured out that for us, the simpler the bottle, the better.

  • Medela b/c of ease with pumping.  However, when my older son was a wee one he didn't nurse & take breast milk past 6 months.  So, when he started formula we used Avent (ended up not loving them) then eventually Playtex drop-ins (liked those a bunch).

So, Medela & Playtex get my vote.  We did wide base nipples with the Medela (not sure if they even still do the narrow base ones) and with Playtex we did the clear silicone nipples instead of the brown latex ones.

Wanna hear my 2 cents about bottles?  A lot of ladies all over the boards like to say to buy several different kinds b/c little one will have to figure out which one they like, will have a hard time with some but not others, etc.

IMO, that's really a silly idea.  There's a learning curve for all babies (with bottle and breast).  Baby has to figure what the heck is going on no matter what you're doing/using.  Switching it all up all the time only adds to the confusion.  Pick the bottles you like and stick with them!  In the absence of something like reflux issues or anatomical issues with the mouth/tongue, baby will get used to using whatever, given time to get comfortable with it.

and ps - I just really like that you are here asking these kinds of questions!!

  • Dr. Brown's is what worked for us, but I would advise registering for a few starter sets of a few different kinds instead of buying a ton of one kind in case your LO does not take to one kind at first!
  • We loved Dr. Brown's bottles.  I agree with hannah about the bottle thing, but I will tell you that I do know of one baby who had severe nipple aversion.  That baby would only take one specific nipple and nothing else.  So, while most babies will be fine with whatever you pick, you just never know how picky some kids will be.

  • thanks for asking been thinking about this too.  I am thinking dr brown or the drop in.  I still dont know.  So many things to get and learn ahhhh!!

  • We've used mostly medela because they came with my pump.  I have a few green sprouts ones and I think I like them better because the flow is a little slower. I decided not to register for any except for what came with my PISA and a Medela feeding set and just figure out what worked as we came along. I think I'm going to get some of the green sprouts 8oz and possibly try their silicone bottles because I don't like plastic.

  • We used Avent and loved them.

Obviously we are all over the map on this issue, aren't you glad you asked?  Wink

  • With H we started w/ an Avent, then one day he refused to take it anymore so we switched to Dr. Browns and used those exclusively.

With L we started w/ Dr. Browns and he didn't take them well so we tried a NUK. He took it just fine, then the cat ate the nipple so we had to try a Dr. Browns again since it was all we had in the house and he started taking them like it was no big deal.

  • i used dr browns for ben and it worked out great. downside to them is that there are so many peices to clean/assemble! this time around nathan was rather picky so we finally ended up with Avent and he will also take drop-ins which are convenient.

  • We used Avent for most of our bottle feedings and occasionally a Born Free bottle that we got free when we registered.  He refused everything else.  When I pumped I pumped into the Medela bottles.
  • OMG!  Bottles were the MOST overwhelming part of registering for us!  We went with the playtex drop-ins.  Good luck!

  • I registered for Breast Flow bottles.  We are planning on breast feeding and these bottles are just like the breast. So when i will have to pump and use a bottle with the sitter, these will be closest to what the baby will be experiencing with the breast.  I think i registered for them at Target.  GL!

All of this! The only bottles I've ever used are Medela (they came with my pump and I got a few off my registry) and Evenflo cheap bottles. Since that was all that was given to Nicholas that was what he learned to take. As pp said, sometimes the nipple can collapse but that actually can be a good thing (per our feeding therapist) because it can help little ones with learning to pace themselves and develop an appropriate suck swallow reflex. FWIW, DS has reflux (is seen by a pediatric GI) and is in feeding therapy and never once have we been told to try a different bottle (with the exception of talking about using a Haberman feeder bottle but thats a whole different ballgame).

The thing that was nice about the Evenflo bottles is that they are the same size opening/mouth as the Medela bottles and WAY cheaper. I EP'ed and the Evenflo hooked right onto my pump parts. Also, since I am lazy I like having a good bottle stash so I'm not washing bottles everyday (or even every other day). You can buy a 12-pack of the 8oz Evenflo bottles w/ nipples for $7.98 right now at BRU! You can also have the option of buying the clear sillicone nipples or the firmer latex nipples (Nicholas takes both).

  • We started out using Playtex drop-ins but I also feel that they are wasteful.  We switched when DD was around 9 months because the bottle warmer at daycare was melting the drop-in "holder."  We ended up switching to Born Free glass bottles, which is what we will use with our next child if they will take them.

  • DS wasn't too picky, we started with Dr. Brown's and that was all we ever used. Sure the extra parts are a pain, but we knew no different so it's just another step in the process.

I've heard that most standard sized bottles hook right up to the connectors of the Medela pumps. I have pumped several times directly into a Dr. Brown's bottle and my cheap-o Evenflo bottles.

We only used the Medela bottles for feedings on the rare occassions DH would miraculously forget a bottle for DS, so luckily I would have the nipple part of the Medela bottle in my pump bag.
