Using lotion on a newborn?

I should know this - but I can't remember...my daughter's skin is pretty dry & I was wondering if I can put some lotion on her skin?  I know you aren't supposed to use anything with a strong scent; but I'm wondering if I can use just a straight up hypo-allergenic lotion for her dry skin?

Thoughts?!

  • We've used J&J baby lotion from day one..that's what they used in the hospital.  We use aquaphor on his face and down below to prevent diaper rash.

  • We used Yes To Baby Carrots on LO when her skin was flaky after we got home, but while in the hospital, we didn't use anything. We still use the Yes To Baby Carrots once in a while, but overall, she doesn't really need it anymore.

  • My DD's skin was flaky too, but they told me not to put lotion on her because it clogs her pores and she can't produce her own oils or something like that. When I took her to her 1 and 2 week checkups, her pediatrician also said her skin wasn't dry, that all newborns had flaky skin. She is two months old now and her skin is very soft and not dry at all even though she gets daily baths. I've never put any lotion on her.

This. It's not good for baby's skin to put lotion on. DH would like to wait until 6mos.

  • You can try olive oil. It's very popular here in England for the newborns. When her skin would look dry, we'd rub her down with it.

  • We use Aveeno cream for babies.  It's in a tube.  Our pedi said it was a good idea since it gets so dry here in the winter and since excema runs in our genes (both DH and I have it.)  I put it on him after every bath, but not on his head, as it will make cradle cap/acne worse.

  • believe it or not

when LO was in the NICU, they used COOKING OIL! The first time I was present when LO took a bath, and the nurse came out with sunflower cooking oil , I was shocked, I thought for real they were going to cook LO, but the nurse explained that since it was from sunflower, it was actually better than baby oil, but I should ONLY use sunflower cooking oil, other oils would harm LO, I never used it again, it is a very weird practice, so I use baby oil instead.

  • We're in the no lotion camp b/c it can mess with the skin's ability to moisturize itself. We do use olive oil if a dry patch is really bugging me.
