So now that we're almost positive that our new LO is a girl, I'm less worried about the expenses - I have more girl clothes and "stuff" than any one baby could possible need. So my two big wants are:
1. An Ergo carrier
2. A video monitor.
Are they worth the expense? DH is *still* not working, and things are tough - but not impossible. I have enough time that I can save, or look for used ones; but I really wanted some other input.
TIA!! - Ada
Re: Ergo and video monitor... worth the money?
I don't have a video monitor but I love my Ergo. I use it more now that C can ride in the back carry. When she was little I preferred the Moby.
Anyway, the Ergo is great because it really distributes the weight evenly and your shoulders don't do all the work.
Yes.
And Yes.
I have both and feel both were worth every penny (though they were both gifts). The Ergo we used on vacations and short trips. Easy to use and hopefully I'll be able to use it for a piggyback carry now that Aaron is older (when he WANTS to be held, that is). And the video monitor is priceless. Saved me many trips into Aaron's bedroom when he's only crying in his sleep and not really awake.
If you only get one, go for the video monitor.

We have a beco carrier, which is similar to the ergo, and I love, love, love it! So does DH. It is much more comfortable than the baby bjorn someone gave us. Also, the main reason we chose the beco was that it comes with the infant insert (a big name for a little piece of fabric with some velcro) and the ergo you had to buy it separately. Of course, that may have changed. FWIW, we have no monitor of any sort.
Us too. We have a summer infant video monitor and we had a bjorn. My DH used the bjorn much more than me but the monitor.... If it broke, I would run out tomorrow and buy another one. And if it was $500, I would probably still buy it. I honestly don't see how anyone goes without one.
Hey Ada!! Check Kijiji.....there's a couple of Ergo's recently posted for sale. I'm getting a video monitor off eBay (they're so overpriced here, esp. BRU), I'm looking at this:
https://cgi.ebay.ca/Summer-Slim-Secure-2-5-Color-Baby-Monitor-Pink-NEW-/320651046452?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa84aae34
I've been watching Kijiji for anything, and haven't come across much. I've done lots of looking online and had quite a bit of baby stuff shipped.
What kind of work is your DH looking for?
I'm a total Kijiji stalker... I look at it practically ten times a day (and I don't have a computer at work!!) and FB has an Airdrie swap 'n buy too, which I am totally addicted to (just ask DH)
BRU have the summer video monitor with the bigger screen (5" maybe?) for $129, which doesn't seem sooo bad. I think I'd prefer the bigger screen so I wouldn't have to put my glasses on in the middle of the night.
DH is a civil engineer by trade, but is foreign-trained and doesn't have is PEng here. He had been working as an estimator in construction until he was laid off in Nov 09. Now I'm working full time, but only for a few more months. Any ideas?
Ergo ~ Yes. I love mine. I got it at a discout off of Babysteals.com when they offered it. You can also check the Babysteals archive site to see if they have some available.
Video Monitor ~ Yes. It brings a peace of mind without having to walk into her room and ake the chance of waking her up.
I you have to choose one go for the monitor.
We have a digital audio monitor because we have waaay too many electronics to deal with interference, and it's just fine. I'd have liked a video monitor, though.
I LOVE my ergo.
Video monitor - yes!!! Get it!! We started out with just a sound monitor and now I can't imagine what we'd do without the video monitor. You can always see if they are fussing in their sleep, how awake they are etc. Sarah usually needs 45 minutes in the morning after waking before she is ready for me to come get her up, and it really helps to see what she is doing. I would never know from the sounds alone.
We have a Baby Bjoern and used it a lot when she was younger, now she wants to move all the time.
