5 mini vents: good bye cheese! :(

No, I'm not intentionally going vegan.. but LO has a protein allergy :( Shorter feedings, refusing food, crying when pooping, and then bloody stool since last night. We thought it might have been reflux, but with the bloody diapers and more Googling [and confirmation by pedi] it's most likely the allergy.

Vent:
And today I just received a case of 48 RTF Enfamil infant bottles. They were free, but, still.. Now I have to put in the effort to find someone to give them to. And I got 5 free sample cans from the pedi last week. I'm a cheapskate, so.. this is a major annoyance now because my freebie stockpile efforts were wasted.

Vent:
I had to pay for the appointment because the new insurance started on the 1st and we don't have the card yet. I'll get reimbursed, but still.. annoying and paperwork and claims department and talking to robots who never understand me anyway and pressing zero starts the menu over instead of giving me a human :(

Vent:
And I was JUST getting him weaned off of formula and back to the boob, too. He's at about 25% formula right now, and I forgot to ask the pedi if I need to pump and dump to get rid of the BM that's making him icky?

Vent:
Well.. he hates this new formula, so I gave him the boob anyway and he was so happy! This nutramigen stuff smells so bad.. poor kid! He keeps making faces at me when I give it to him. And he won't eat much = he is sleeping for shorter spans of time.. ughhhhhh....

Vent:
I LOVE DAIRY! And we just went grocery shopping so I have a fridge full of it! Bummer.

  • If he's not taking the nutrimigen well and is taking the boob ok I'd keep giving it for now while you detox and dump your stash or dump what you pump normally... What a pain. I'd die w/o dairy so I feel for you!!! ((hugs)) FWIW he MAY grow out of it. I've heard of many moms who can slowly incorporate the dairy back in. So there's hope! :(

  • I had to give up dairy, shrimp, brocolli, indian butter chicken, and a few other things when dd was little. Some where after a year I was slowly able to add it back in. Like little sips or sprinkles of cheese.

DD is also allergice to egg whites.

I hear ya on the being a dairy addict. I cried so many times trying to figure out what the heck to eat without cheese.

Cutting out dairy does really stink.

  • Another here to commiserate over the loss of dairy. On the upside...I am also dairy sensitive and when it's out of my system I feel better myself. Less stomach troubles and way less congested overall. It's hard to stick to. I fall off the wagon but I get right back on. DD is probably never going to be able to have dairy but what she doesn't know won't be a big deal. And it's kind of fun now looking for recipes that will be really good that don't have dairy. And little things like homemade bread...so much tastier. I write this as I wipe off fresh rye bread crumbs off my shirt and contemplate a second piece. And you get used to the vegan butter. It's still awful some moments, but the more I eat it the less offensive it gets. There's hope.
  • Cutting out dairy does suck at first but try to find the subs.  I've even found lots of store bought breads without dairy.  Anything marked "parve" or "pareve" (kosher terms) are good, it's an easy way to tell one thing from another.

As for the nursing, if he wants to nurse, do it!  It's better for him even with the dairy than the formula.  Just take a nursing vacation and nurse nurse nurse for a few days to get your supply up.  It can get a little rough during this but after a few days your body should catch up.  Stay hydrated too.

The reason I suggest this is because it takes about 2 weeks for the milk proteins to get out of your system and another 2 to get out of his.  You should notice a marked difference in the meantime, after about 10 days or so, but 4 weeks is a LONG time with such a young baby and if you are wanting to establish breastfeeding it is better to do so as early as possible.  He will be just fine in the long run.

There are a lot of current and former dairy free ladies here (including myself) so we're here to help!  DS was able to eat cheese at around 9 months, all of a sudden, and it has been great.

And hey, the only weight I lost after the initial post-birth period was when I was dairy free!

  • Wow, thanks so much for all the info :)

Sticking with the parve items is a nice trick! I was mostly concerned over the hidden dairy items, too.

Thanks for all the positivity, you lovely ladies! It'll keep me marchin' on ;)

  • I'm sorry :(

I was diary free for a year for DS. I'm just now starting him up on a little dairy, so far so good...and me too. I would nurse him if you can. But it can take up to a month for all the dairy to leave yours and his systems.

  • :(

DS had an allergy to dairy and soy (and eggs, fish, peanuts, treenuts) and we found out via bloody stools too :( While he wouldn't take nutramigen, he took alimentum... It still stinks, but I guess it's sweeter or something.

I wouldn't pump and dump, but if you have BM in the fridge, I might freeze it and save it for when you might be able to reintroduce dairy to your diet.  It can take a few weeks for dairy to leave your system entirely.

I was able to reintroduce goats milk while BFing DS, so maybe you'll be able to do that too **fingers crossed for you**

Good luck! Dairy allergies are no fun :(
