Illinois Babies

Hello Everyone! I'm a new mom & new to Chicago!

Hi,

Just wanted to say hi to everyone :)

We just moved from NYC to Chicago bc of my husband's new job - which was very unexpected esp. when you are due in two months and have to leave all your friends behind ;( But we feel really good and excited about the new city, new home, new work and esp our baby girl due Mar 27th! :)

As I am currently taking some time off from work, I've been spending more and more time lately in studying and researching about birth, baby stuff and am really interested about natural birth (unmedicated if possible - but I change my mind every day, every second), doulas, prenatal yoga, breastfeeding etc. But I have to admit - they STILL sound so unreeeeal to me lol

Would be great to share any ideas/infos with you on this board going forward! :)

  • Hi Katharina!  We actually just moved from NYC to Chicago a few months ago too!  The move was also due to DH's job.  Where in nyc were you?  We lived in Tribeca/Battery Park City.  When we moved here, we joined the NPN parent's network.  It's a good online resource for all sorts of kid and non-kid stuff.  They also have playgroup meetups, various events, etc.  They just revamped the website, so all the kinks are still being ironed out, but you might want to check it out.  They also have a discussion board where you can ask all your questions on doulas, yoga, etc.  Hope that helps.  Welcome to Chicago!

i lived used to live in BPC as well!

i second checking out NPN. i found a good playgroup that way. they have so many resources for parents in the chicago area.

do you have any specific questions about life in chicago that we can help with?

Nice!  I lived in Gateway Plaza on S.End Ave and Liberty Ave for about 5 years, and then we moved down the street closer to Battery Park after that.  Were you part of the HRP Mamas?

  • THANK YOU EVERYONE for the warm welcome! :)

I just talked to Birthways Doula and think we are going to hire them at my delivery at Prentice. I guess I do feel more comfortable about delivering at a big hospital in the city but still want to make this experience as private and intimate as possible with a doula... :)

They also recommended me a few good acupuncture/massage/yoga places as I do have some major hip/lower back pain from pregnancy (guess no one is surprised! lol):

    www.pullingdownthemoon.com and www.sourcehealing.com

    www.sweetpeasstudio.com and www.bloomyogastudio.com

But those yoga places are bit far from our place (we live in New East Side) and I think I will just register for yoga classes at Prentice since it's nearby. Oh and I will also look at Soulistic since it seems also nearby. (Thanks for the tip :) I might try out acupuncture at Source Healing though - I am a big fan of alternative medicine!

Will share more of my experience later!

    Happy weekend,

    Katharina

WOW! We lived at Gateway Plaza in NYC too! My work was within walking distance from our place. We loved the park, the river and esp the view from our apt and that's why we also picked New East Side area when we moved to Chicago.

I can't wait for the spring to come so I can walk to the park, river - I guess then with a stroller :) I hear there are also lots of concerts in the park too! Looking forward to it!

  • Just wanted to say welcome and good luck! We're just trying to get this board up and running - feel free to ask any questions - the more discussion we can get going here, the better!
  • I would also recommend checking out various meet-up groups, many of them are dedicated to the ideas that you are interested in and would allow you to meet people too!

  • LOL!  Small world!  We were in building 400 of Gateway Plaza:)  Your new neighborhood sounds great, and a lot like BPC.  We moved to Roscoe Village, and I definitely miss having the water right there.  Chicago is a great city with tons to do for kids, so enjoy!  And yes, like pp mentioned, Meetup.com is a good resource as well.  I joined a Chicago moms meetup group, and they have many activities each week for moms and babies.

lol. i used to own a dog walking company and had clients in that bldg. i was technically across the street from bpc at 90 washington, and later 88 greenwich. but i would walk across the bridge about 100 times a day for work! (and to eat, shop, etc!)

i didn't have my son when i was there so i wasn't an HRP mama, but i had two good friends who were, and i watched their kids for them, so i went to a few events.
