Where I work there is no daycare in house. So we have made our schedules work so that we don't need daycare. Well I have the idea to rent some empty space to open a daycare specifically for employees' kids here in our building. So here are the questions I have:
Do you have a built in daycare where you work? If so, do you like that feature? And if not, would you use the daycare if there was one integrated into your work?
Re: Working Mamas, I have a question for you...

And with the delivery trifecra of one twin vaginal, one c-section with general anesthesia for twin B, Spencer and Sidney joined us at 35 weeks exactly on June 18.
I have a feeling it would be quite the undertaking, but if you are game, then go for it. I would have the same standards for a work daycare that I do for the daycare DS is in now. Licensed, cleaned, educated employees, etc. I would not forgo any of that for the convenience of it being at my work. If it met all of my criteria and I could afford it, it would be AWESOME!
Go Phils!!
Yes there is a daycare
Yes I do like the idea but...LO has been on the list since November 2009 and is not slotted to go in until August 2012 (originally was told August 2010...).
I would use it except that I am losing patience because every 3 months when I call to make sure LO is still on the list and waiting on the correct age room (which they told me to do), LO moves down the list by another 1-2 kids...
It would absolutly be licensed and meet all of the Early Childhood standards. I would also get my Director's license and treat it just like any other day care. I want it to be more affordable than the other day cares in town (they are about $220/week for 0-2yo). I have worked in day cares and while they were all different and sometimes not very fun, I would love making this more about the employees and their kids. A place for them to come and visit them, for nursing moms to drop in whenever, etc.
Wow that sucks. There are only 8-10 kids that would need the care, that I know of right now, and having that convienience would be awesome for everyone. Hope it gets better for you!
There was a daycare until a few months ago, run by the YMCA.
I probably would have sent her there because of the ability to see her often, but there were several downsides. One is that if I had to stay home sick, I work 30 minutes away, so taking to daycare would be a pain. Much more importantly, I love that she is with kids her own age in daycare, and they are all learning developmentally appropriate things. I don't feel like she would get enough attention or the right kind of it if she was mixed in with kids of all age groups. I feel the same way about inhome daycare (which I am strongly against because of my own personal experiences), but I also don't think most of those centers are learning-focused enough either. (inhomes, not mixed age group centers)
I don't have an on-site day care but DS goes to one about a mile from my work. I loved it when I nursed him for the first year because I would just hop over at lunch time. I also find it convenient if he has a mid-day doctor appointment I could grab him and take to the doctors and back quickly. Luckily my DH works close by too (about 10 miles away from DS) so DH picks DS up at 4pm - while I drop DS off at 8:30. This also nice since DH can still drop him off if I'm sick.
I would love an onsite center. I pay a fortune for my daycare $1200/month.
We have onsite daycare - LOVE IT! It's just as good if not better as every other daycare we toured/looked into. It was actually the cheapest, but it's still not cheap - just slightly better than the others around.
Totally worth the convenience. I visited DS during his first year every single day. Now he gets too upset when I leave, so I don't visit during the day anymore.
It's close enough that when I am sick, DH can take him to daycare while I stay home. They also do activities onsite for holidays that it's easy to get away from my desk for a little bit to spend time with him.
Though starting one up, does sound like a lot of work!

My work has 3 buildings... each has a daycare in it. I use the one closest to home.. even though I work out of the building furthest away. This way it's on the way to and from and I don't have to be stuck in traffic of bad weather with DS. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this option. I recently started working in the same building as DS 2xs a week and I love to go peek at him during the day to see him playing
I have jokingly asked my boss if we could turn our rarely used training room into a day care since there has been a baby boom in the last couple years at our work. Unfortunately she keeps saying, "no." Might have something to do with it being a juvenile detention center.
)
Yes, given that the care was up to par and the cost was reasonable, I would use the day care at work if needed and if available.
Good luck! I think it's great that you're working to be proactive for the greater good!!!!
we don't have one but like every 2-3 years a big survey goes out asking all sorts of questions about interest & what you'd look for, etc. I think they've found that the cost of it is too high for the demand & what ppl are willing to pay (I work at a large university & part of the issue is that a lot of people only work 9 months & don't want to pay for summer break).
I like the idea of it in theory but in my situation, i don't know that I'd use it- I work 30 min south of my home, MH works 20 min north. Our daycare is about 10 min north on MH's way to work. Therefore if DC was at my work, I'd have to do all drop off & pick up (he drops off & I pick up now), not to mention the fact that if I wanted to work from home or have people come to the house to do work (like right now the plumber is here so it is nice that the kids are at DC!) or run errands locally, etc then it would be really inconvenient.
ETA- I just sawt he post about it being for 8-10 kids- what are the age ranges? It would be a turnoff to me to use a daycare that had only about 8 kids from 6 weeks through kindergarten age, I like the separation of different age groups & the fact that teachers can focus on the skills appropriate for that group & are not going to be dealing w/ so many levels.
I would be thrilled if this was an option at my work! I think extended evening hours would be a huge bonus. Of course, being competitive with cost is important. I think people complaining about the wait lists for their business run daycare tells you right there that many people like the convenience. Also, being far from home on a sick day is hopefully a rare occurance as compared to the amount of days that we all have to go into work.
I think its a great idea, if you have noticed a need for additional daycare in your are. Do people complain that they can't find openings? Or not enough quality options? Ask around your office- that may give you a better idea of how great the need is.
