Generic Formula?

I had to formula feed Raquel and I was just thinking ahead to the new baby and remembering how we'd spend $250 a month on similac formula. I'm hoping to breastfeed but if I can't did anyone use generic formula brands (e.g., target, costco, etc.)? Are they REALLY exactly the same as the name brands?

Re: Generic Formula?

  • Look on the back of the cans.  As far as I can tell, they are about the same, perhaps a few 10ths of a point different in different areas.  I use the Member's Mark from Sam's, less than $20 for a big monster can.  I also use their diapers and wipes.  My GP is ok with the generic formula.

  • I wanted to use organic formula, so I did a bunch of research and found out that Walmart's house brand organic formula is manufactured in the same plant--is, in essence, the same thing--as one of the big organic brands' formula. But the big brand is about $30 a can and Walmart's is $15. So we trekked there (even though I despise Walmart!) because the cost was just so different for basically the same product. It almost killed me to pay regular price a couple times when we unexpectedly ran out of the Walmart stuff.

So to answer your question, in my case, we used generic and were beyond happy about it! :)

  • I used Target brand for both of mine.  It's maybe a little different but negligible.  The kids didn't seem to mind, that's for sure.  And after all the recalls of name-brands, I'm not sold on generic being terrible...

  • I asked my ped what the difference was - he said that stores buy the name brand company's old recipe. It is the same, only cheaper.
  • I've used Costco Kirkland brand and Babies R Us brand.

No problems with consumption of either. There didn't even need to be an adjustment period - I just switched cold turkey and LO drank it up.  However, I prefer Babies R Us, as it mixes faster and produces less bubbles.

The large cans of Babies R Us  (29 oz) have been coming with $5 off coupons too, so that is a plus.

Both formulas I used were pro biotic.

    This exactly.

  • They are exactly the same unless you need the specialty formulas for extra sensitive babies with reflux or allergies. Then you end up with the name brands since most stores don't make an equivalent to that.
