Labor in a storm...

I have a friend who had a baby last week and another that was sceduled to have a c-section yesterday but had to reschule due to the storm.  Could you imagine going into labor in a storm?!  I was talking to my hubby about that and he said he would totally panic.  So even though we will be pregnant through the summer at least we have no chance of going into labor in a blizzard!

Re: Labor in a storm...

  • A friend of mine was moved mid-pushing to the hallway of the hospital because there was a tornado warning.  And the power had already gone out and they were without a/c (in June.)  Quite the memorable delivery for her!

  • Did you hear the story on the news? A woman in Minnesota had her water break in the middle of the blizzard with 5 foot drifts all around her house - she called 911, who called the military. They drove a huge, specialized tank that is designed to work in the sand - it cut through the drifts and carried her to the hospital in about 45 minutes. An incredible story (it was on NPR tonight)!

  • My little brother was born in a blizzard. My mom was having a homebirth but the doctor didn't make it in time because of the storm. My dad delivered him.

  • I thought about that today too. At least I can cross blizzard off my list of things to worry about! My aunt gave birth during an earth quake. She laughs about it now, but I imagine it was terrifying at the time.

  • When I had my DS I had gone to the docs office in the morning and she sent me over to the hospital because of my high blood pressure.  Well it was Jan 31, 2008 and although my BP went down I began having mild contractions while at the hospital.  The news was calling for snow that evening.  The doc came in about 8pm and said I can go home if I wanted or I could stay the night due to having the contractions.  I said I wanted to stay because I didnt want to go home and end up trying to come back in the middle of a snow storm.  Of course it snowed bad that night and the next morning I went into labor!  I was glad I was already at the hospital!!!!

  • Makes me happy to be due in Aug! I guess the worst thing would be a heat wave!

  • The L&D nurses I talked to at my hospital when I was in labor with DS (it was a long labor, we chatted a lot :)) said that the whole "women go into labor during a big storm or full moon" stories are actually true, that a rise or fall (I don't remember which) in barometric pressure does cause women to go into labor.

I actually went into labor with my second one during a full moon and L&D was packed!  I tried to labor through a lot at home and when I got there my labor was already pretty intense, but they had no rooms open for delivery!  First they called another hospital to see if I could get in there, but it was also packed.  Luckily one of the rooms was a woman being prepped for a non emergency c-section and they were able to move her to get me in.  LOL I'm sure she was pissed but at that point I was ready to have the baby in the hall!  I had my daughter an hour after I got in the room. :-)

No- I didn't hear the story!!!  That would be absolutely crazy, and if I was here I would have been soo happy to see the military enter my house!

I went into labor with my first during a thunderstorm and the nurses told me the same thing. They did a story on the news today about how packed all the L&D floors were around here Tuesday night/Wednesday morning because of the huge snow storm.

  • There will be a full moon on August 13, I wonder how many August moms will be giving birth the 13th or the 14th!

  • Some of us ladies get to worry about hurricanes coming through and helping us go into labor. I have a friend who's 1st was due in august. They ended up having to induce her because rather than the storm helping her go into labor it did the complete opposite, she became undialated and effaced.
  • We just got hit with a bad blizzard that started on Tuesday afternoon.  A lady went into labor.  She called her doctor, who said he didn't think she was in labor yet and to hang tight.  Her water broke and she called an ambulance, which couldn't make it down her street.  She had to walk a block or two, in the snow!  in labor!  To make it to the ambulance!  By the time she got to the hospital she was 9 cm.

  • With DS, I was due end of February--but the last week of January, we had a HUGE ice storm hit (we lived in NW Arkansas at the time) and the town we lived in--and surrounding towns--were without power, some people for a few weeks (my IL's included). H was TERRIFIED that I would go into labor a few weeks early, and we wouldn't be able to get to the hospital (which was 20 min away by interstate) or that the hospital would lose power. Poor guy was so nervous.
