How has teaching changed/helped you to form an opinion on naming your child?
I personally, find that boys with names that start with J tend to be a handful. Examples: Jay, Judah, Jonathan
DH's name is James. He turned out very well thanks to his parents wonderful upbringing. He is also a teacher and...he surprisingly agrees with my J theory.
Re: Teachers or anyone who works with children...
Being a teacher makes me want to choose easily recognizable and spelled right for my kid.
That's my biggest thing.
I don't like girl names with trendy K names (Kaylie, Kali, Kabrie etc). All the ones I know are pretty snotty.
There are now quite a few names that bring up negative images in my head based on students I have had... Austin, Jayden, Mason, Madison, Gracie, just to name a few.
...and this is a clip from my favourite How I Met Your Mother episode

With the name connection, DH obviously gets a kick out of it.
One of the child psychiatrists that I work with jokes with me about never naming my baby Brittany- he says he has never known a "normal" child with that name. (I think he is a little nuts!)
Personally, working with mentally ill kids, I find no correllation between name and behavior or personality. I think its mostly about the parents and how we raise our kiddos.
I worked with several boys named Angel, Christian, and Jesus, and I think those names are a sure-fire way to make sure your child is the OPPOSITE of their namesake. lol
There will also be no Sasha's, Dyson's, Reggie's, Lexie's, Harley's, or Teresa's. NEVER. The list could go on and on and on...
I substitute teach and I swear there is at least 1 Jacob, Ethan, and Madison in every class!
Which brings me to my next point... my DH wants to name our kid Ethan if he is a boy. It is a good name, don't get me wrong, but I have met SO many Ethans and I don't want our kid to be known as "Ethan E."
Also, I have had several Braydens, Jadens, Aidens, etc. So, I don't think I will name my kid one of those (even though I like Hayden, but don't know if I want it because it rhymes with those, bleh).
I also don't like J names. I have rarely had a J named student who is not a mess. I work with a James now, and seriously, YIKES. He is a big mess.
We'll miss you sweet Debbie Girl (4.21.12) and sweet Cindy Girl (8.9.12)
