TV show question

DS is not interested the least bit in the tv which for the most part is fine, but he is getting to be a handful while I am in the bathroom with the door open to watch him(sorry if TMI) or trying to make dinner.  I am trying to see if there are any educational shows that may be able to keep his attention for maybe 10-15 minutes or so a day...

I have direct TV if that makes a differences and a DVR so it doesn't matter when they are on, I just want to record a few to try and have no idea where to start besides sesame street..... there looks to be a ton on but I am sure most of it is junk....

Re: TV show question

  • Sprout has lots of nice short shows.  There is a lot of variety, so something might catch his interest.

FWIW though, DS didn't get interested in TV until 18-20 months old.

  • I usually just let J come into the bathroom with me (now there's some TMI . . .) and if he's underfoot when I'm cooking I give him some tupperware and spatulas and stuff and he goes to town. We're trying to hold off on TV for a while yet, but when we got desperate on our last car trip he did like watching some Sesame Street videos on YouTube.

  • he does come in the bathroom with me and thats the problem, he tries to get his hands everywhere if you know what i mean....haha

I'll try some sesame street, like I said, I am not going for a babysitter, im going for a total of like 10-15 min total a day......

  • Mine comes in the bathroom with me too (more TMI!). He does pretty well with playing in the kitchen like t&c said, with tupperware/wooden spoons, and even a small broom. We too are trying to hold off on tv until at least 2...we got desperate when he was on the nebulizer back in December and wanted nothing to do with sitting with it for 10 minutes! We DVR'd one Sesame Street and he just watched the same Elmo part over and over if he got really fussy while he was doing it. The doc even said do what you have to do to get him to sit still for just a little bit! :) So yes, I too think Sesame Street might be a hit with your ds!

  • DS isn't interested in an episode of anything, but he will watch something like Elmo doing Elmo's Song (available on sesamestreet.org or YouTube) or something like the DVDs that come with the ABCs or 123s CDs from They Might Be Giants.

I will say, though, that I regret introducing DS to the toddler crack that is Elmo.  I do get to go to the bathroom alone occasionally, but now that he knows that the computer can play videos that entertain him, that's all he wants to do.  When I try to play just one or two short videos for him (5 min. or so), there's a 50/50 chance of a tantrum when I close the web site.  Besides being a pain (and making me feel guilty about getting him addicted to TV/videos), not being able to use the computer without him demanding "Song!" or "Mo!" (Elmo) is really cutting into my Nest time ;)  I think it might be worse, though, if he knew that the TV could entertain him.

  • This sounds terrible, but I will sit her in front of the weather channel sometimes. It only lasts a few minutes, but it's the only thing that seems to hold her attention. It must be the funky muzak. Wink I've tried normal kids tv (Curious George, some other insipid cartoon I can't remember), and she had no interest.
  • the weather channel..now that you mention it, i know someone else who does that too...DS would probably like it, he loves music and dancing and its much less obnoxious than elmo...haha

    thanks ladies!!

  • DD is not real interested in TV but the one show that mesmerizes her is Timmy Time on Disney. It is a bizarre claymation show and she is entranced for the 20 minutes.

Ahem, we are starting to have this problem too! Well, that and constantly flushing the toilet while I am still on it!

I also think the weather channel idea sounds interesting to grab a couple minutes! :)

  • My DD wasn't into any shows until she was about 18 months.  DS will watch something if she has it on, but he will rarely sit still while watching...it keeps his attention, but he's still walking around the living room and such.  Personally, I didn't care about educational when they were under two years old...just wanted "entertaining" since they don't watch much of it.

DD liked the Fisher Price "Little People" DVDs (one came with each toy she was given) starting at 18 months.  I had to wean her off of them and onto "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" because I couldn't take them anymore...Aaron Neville's voice got stuck in my head  :)  She never got into "Sesame Street" or "Little Einsteins" or any other "smart" shows I tried.  By the time she was two, DD also liked "The Wonder Pets" and is now also into "Berenstain Bears."

You can look up show clips on YouTube and see if anything catches and holds his attention and go from there.  Good luck!

  • The only thing that C will watch for more than a second is the Elmo's World portion of SS. And even that, barely. I usually leave him to play while I run to the bathroom, because we have gates up to keep him out of the really dangerous stuff. I usually don't shower while he's awake, if it's just the two of us.

For cooking, I put a gate between the kitchen and the living room and he generally plays right on the other side of the gate with a giant pile of toys and some selected  spoon, spatulas and pitchers. I also give him some milk and a few cheerios in a snack trap to keep him occupied (and because he's usually starving when he gets home from DCP).

    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

  • DS really likes Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Disney and The Wiggles on Sprout.  He also likes watching the Fresh Beat Band on Nick Jr...he loves music and dancing so Wiggles and Fresh Beat are really fun for him.  Jack's Big Music Show on Nick Jr. is another one to try...that has "muppet" type characters who sing, interspersed with "videos" of kid friendly artists like Laurie Berkner.

Boy, my post makes it sound like he watches a TON of TV...not the case, just trying to give you a variety of things to try if Sesame Street doesn't work...my kids never cared much for Sesame Street, except for Elmo's World during the last 15 minutes or so....
