Babies: 9 - 12 Months

So how many "words" does your LO have? clicky poll

I am feeling a little behind here... I read on FB and on here about how babies my DD's age are saying words like "no" and "mama", "dadda", "baba", etc... And while my child says these words, I believe they are merely sounds she makes (she does not use them in context).

So how many "words" does your LO have? And I mean words that they say IN CONTEXT... Not just sounds they make. Like they see you and say "Mamma" and they see H and say "Dadda".

  • Henry babbles up a storm and makes sounds like "mama" and "dada" but doesn't use them in context.  I'm not worried, yet.

  • I voted for 4. C says "Mama" when he sees myself or SO or if he needs to get our attention. He also says "hi" when someone walks in, but not all the time. He very clearly says "yes" when I ask him something, even if the answer is no LOL. And more recently he says "that", which sounds more like "tat" when he's pointing to something he likes or wants.

  • I voted for 2...I'm pretty sure she's saying "hi" and "hey" and means it.  She's been saying "dada" and "mama" -- most of the time, I think it's just babble, but the past couple of days, she's been more selective about when she says it (and to the correct parent), so it's possible that these are becoming real words, too.

  • Clearly and in the right context my dd says "hi" and "bye" altough she's a bit lazy once in a while with bye and it sounds more like "buh buh" sometimes.

She babbles and we'll get mamma and dadda and what I think is up, but I'm not sure she's acutally trying to say them, or just more so likes the way the sounds feel in her mouth (if that makes sense).

  • I think all that DD uses in context is bye-bye and Daddy.

  • DD has like 2.5

She says Mama when she sees me, and Dada when she sees DH and just recently she's been saying what sounds like "DogDog" when she sees the dog....at first I thought she was calling the dog Dada....but it sounds distinctly different than when she says Dada to DH.

Now, she says these words IN context as well as OUT of context.  (sometimes she'll babble babble babble and use all three of these words, in reference to toys, the tv, her bottle, etc, but other times it's directly AT us).

  • DS only says "bah " for ball in context.  Everything else is random babble at this point...which is completely normal.

  • She knows (I mean understands and uses) Mom-mom, Dad, fish, juice, and hi.
  • Seriously, there is absolutely no reason to be concerned about this until like 18 months. If I were stretching, I could maybe say my baby has 1 word and she just turned 1. She babbles all the time but I don't believe that she knows and uses words consistently. Of all of the babies I've known in real life, zero were actually using words by 9 months. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it certainly isn't the norm. What is more important is that your baby recognizes words and can follow simple directions by 12 months - their receptive language. (like - give me the ball)

I just saw the doc for her 12 month visit and it wasn't even brought up at all. It's not even remotely an issue at this point.

This exactly. I don't really expect him to talk at this age.

My baby doesn't even babble yet.  Sad

Don't feel bad, Josh just started babbling a couple of days ago - different kids are focused on different aspects of development (in contrast, my daughter didn't crawl until 10 months, but she started babbling and talking earlier and talks like a 4 year old now).

  • same here; DD babbles some of these things but doesn't use them in context.

  • my dd has just started using words in context. She says "no no", "mama", "dada", "my". Sometimes she just babbles with the same words. She definitely knows what they mean, and she uses pointing to help communicate now.

  • I said three, He knows Mama and Dad and Ahhhchoo... I know the last one is a sound after someone sneezes he always copies but I count that as a word!

  • None, she babbles but she barely even babbles the "mama" or "dada" sounds.  Mostly she's just into screaming and screeching these days.
  • For my DS, mama and dada are not in context to us yet.  But he does say "bah" for ball and "buh" for book consistently.

    So I voted for two.

  • I voted 5+ but I consider them more sounds than words but I know what he wants when he says them.  Mama, dada, nana (banana), nighnigh (night night), mo (more), baba (bottle).

  • We have 2. Dada and At. At meaning Cat. I can ask him where the cat is and he'll look until he sees one then stare at it. Sometimes if a cat is nearby he'll yell "AT!" and run at it. Too cute!

  • LO "talks" but he hasn't put anything in context yet... He'll say dada and sometimes even add a long EEEEE at the end but he'll say it when DH comes in the room or he'll say it to his toys.
