S/O Baby Names You Can't Stand: A Question

I hate all trendy names. Even if it's a classic name that is on the rise, I hate it.

So DH and I are down to Katherine April or Susannah April for this LO.

I was at work last week and someone asked me if we had a name. I told them no, and tossed out our standard list of 5 names that we tell people so they stop asking: Katherine, Susannah, Pearl, Maeve, and Eleanor.

A guy I work with chimes in: "No way! Katherine is our name for daughter #2!!!"

Now I am turned off by the name. He named his first daugher Madison, which is pretty, but SOOOOO trendy right now. I like this guy and his wife,  They are just kind of very boring people, not creative, don't think outside the box, etc.... So now I feel like our name choice is boring.

?- if someone you didn't like/look up to was using the same name as you, would it cause you to change your name choice?

Re: S/O Baby Names You Can't Stand: A Question

  • Not particularly.

I find it amusing at best when people like/dislike our name list and then move on. It really doesn't change the way i feel about any of the names on our list.

  • I like the name Katherine better but I would have a problem using a name that someone I don't care for used. Are you due first?

They aren't even Pregnant. They just had their first daughter, Madison, in December. It's just that I think they are such plain people, I hate that we have the same name on our list! I wish he had never told me that they already have a name picked out for baby #2.

  • We aren't telling people what our name list is because I know my mom won't like one of our girl names.  I don't really care what other people think.  The only way I would change our name choice is if a relative is using the same name.  This is risky for us because there are 2 babies due before us and 1 due 4 weeks after us.  They all know the sex so we'll know their names before our LO arrives!

Oh for bacon's sake....they may not even ever have a girl! You should use it. I think it's super weird he told you they already had a LO#2 name picked out.

Katherine is a nice, classic name. DH and I aren't that plain at all....I think people are surprised at  our name choice. = )

  • I think Katherine is such a classic, beautiful name. Not at all "plain". You can't go wrong with timeless names like that IMO

  • Pook- it's not that I would mind sharing a name with a coworker, it's just that this coworker is someone who I would not look to for fashion trends, or style, or name choices!

He's the guy that wears his red polo on Monday, his blue polo on Tuesday, his grey polo on Wednesday....etc.

Do I want my daughter to have a name that this kind of guy likes??

  • If these people aren't even pregnant, screw that.  Go with what you like - Katherine is a really beautiful name and if you like it, use it.

We aren't telling our name to anyone because we don't want opinions.  I have 5 friends due before me - two are team green, one is having a girl and two are having boys.  If any of them have a daughter and pick our name we would change our name, that is the only reason why.

  • I get what you're saying... but with traditional/classic names, you're going to find people with less "original" or "out of the box" thinkers liking them.

You can't have your cake and eat it too sometimes *shrug*

  • I think Susannah is more "plain" than Katherine, simply because the first thing I think of "Oh, Susannah!" and any song that mentions banjos makes me think of hillbillies.

If you love a name, I really wouldn't change it just because someone you don't like likes it too!  It's about what you like and what it means to you.

I totally get what you are saying!! I just don't have any advice for that part of it!

I can't get behind you on this one, because I don't look to others for trends, style, or name choices. I also don't measure my choices against others and decide if they make the cut. All I can say is, if it really is bothersome (which it sounds like he irritates you) then it is back to the drawing board/list for another name :)

  • I personally wouldn't even think twice about it.

I firmly believe in keeping names to ourselves so that situations like these don't happen.

  • What does it matter?  You're bound to have some things in common with the guy whether you like it or not.  Maybe it means that he occasionally has unexpectedly good taste rather than that your taste is worse than you thought.

No way.  I would only think twice if it was a super close friend or relative and they used the name first.  Also - our name choices completely changed each of our three pregnancies.  kind of funny how that happened.

  • Katherine is a classic name, not trendy. It isn't even that popular right now except for everyone wants to call their kid "Katie" so maybe people are mulling over that v. Kaitilyn or something.

I say go for it, it is a great name.

  • Oh and by the time they have a second girl they might have already changed their name choice.  They might think Katherine is too exotic of a name and you'll be in the clear all around!

haha, thanks ladies. DH keeps telling me I need to stop over thinking this. I just wish we could settle on a name now and I feel like we won't actually have a name for DD until she's born!

  • I think you are being hormonal.  You have been talking about how you love the name Katherine for months!  So some guy you don't like has it on a list for a child that isn't even conceived yet, even if he is boring and predictable!  It is a great name for a little girl, and you have already professed your love for the name.  Go with it!  ::hugs::

P.S. I LOVE Maeve.  I almost never hear people use the name, but on the rare occasions that I meet a little Maeve, it always strikes me as so precious!

  • This guy is a temporary part of your life, but your daughter will be in your life forever - long after you've forgotten about this dude.  If you like it that's all that matters.

Personally, I think Katherine is a great name - and I have lived with it for 28 years :)

  • I love Katherine.  Forget Claimy McClaimerson!

Although I do worry about it being overused.  Especially remembering all of my Diana friends who were born right around the last royal wedding.  I'm wondering how many Katherines will be born due to the future princess.

  • I love the name Katherine, it's mine and was my grandmothers name. It carries for generations yet you can always freshen it up. You said you were already calling her Rin, I love it! Go for it!!!!

  • I love the name Eleanor!!!!!! that was the babies name from "one born every minute"

It might be because I like te song Eleanor Rigby, but i like it.

Like most PP said, Catherine is everywhere (not for babies as much) Cathy, katie, Caitlyn, Kate, ......Its a classic, so many different people (style and all) are going to use it. Like Sarah.
