BF and bottle feeding

i've decided that while at home i'm going to breastfeed and while we're out and about i'm about to bottle feed. so far it's working really well [even though we just started doing this yesterday]. i wanted to see if anyone else is doing this / done this and did it work out in your advantage? TIA

Re: BF and bottle feeding

  • I do both. LO has no problem with switching back and forth. I BF throughout the day and every other feeding through the night; DH feeds him the rest of the time with a bottle. I think that when we go in public bottle feeding will be easier, although I'll still carry my nursing cover with me. We'll see which one works out better for us.

  • I pump but maybe once or twice a week put her on my breast and she takes it fine.
  • After having to BF LO in the car at DH's work, I broke down and bought a manual pump. Now I have a small (2 bottles) stash of BM for whenever we'll be out of the house for more than an hour. I also keep a bottle of Similac ReadyFeed in the diaper bag - just in case. So far so good... no nipple confusion. DD also recently started accepting a paci. Yay!
  • Just keep in mind that if you regularly give a bottle and don't pump soon after, your supply may decrease because your body didn't know that LO needed to eat, KWIM?
  • We are doing both.  No issues so far.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

Ditto. Except like pp mentioned, when she gets a bottle I've either just pumped or will pump right after/during her bottle feed.

  • We've started switching between BFing and bottle feeding when our LO was about ten days old (between lack of sleep and needing to get out of the house, I was nearly losing my mind and DH offered to take over half the night feedings). She's done fine switching between the two; the only thing I've recently noticed is that she is much quicker to give up on the breast if milk is not coming out easily (towards the end of a feeding). I think she is used to milk coming out of the bottle so easily that she has gotten a little lazy and doesn't want to work to get the last bit of milk out when she BFs.

However, for my sanity and to see DH be able to bond with her during feeding time (plus grandparents and other family members who are lining up to spend time with our little monkey), it has been well worth it.

  • My fatty is a hungry guy. He BFs then takes a bottle after nursing from both sides. I'm feeding a 2 week old in a 3 month old's body.

  • LO is only 5 days old, so no public outings yet. But I plan on doing this too. I just think it will be a lot easier for me and him in the long run. No whipping out the cover, my boob and everything. To me it's a great idea Big Smile
